I switched over about 3 weeks ago and as much as I’m loving it and feel great, I’m not very hungry anymore. I’m not overweight to start, I’m healthy and fit, and switched over because of my IBS - it has made a world of difference with that. But when I would normally be hungry at the appropriate mealtimes, I find myself almost forcing myself to eat! Is this normal when switching to a plant based diet? And just to clarify, I don’t mean forcing like it’s difficult or painful to eat, but I could easily skip the meal and not feel bad. It’s like I’m eating because it’s healthy and I should, not because I’m super hungry, if this makes sense.
Any input would be appreciated! |
| OP again - just to clarify, I will eat fish, but no other meat. And dairy - not just plant based. I should have said vegetarian diet! |
| Most vegetarians I know can skip meals because they’re always snacking on candy, donuts and chips or still full from inhaling a cheese pizza the night before. |
My vegetarian IL seems to subsist on pita, crackers, and hummus by the tubful. I don’t know that her diet is healthier than mine. |
| We've done it about half of this year but not 100%. We have the occasional bit of meat, fish, shellfish or cheese. I lost a fair amount of weight and bulk and am hopeful that the real benefit is on the inside. |
| Do you didn’t eat fruit and vegetables and now that you do, you feel satiated? Congrats. This is normal. It’s called fiber. |
| When I went vegetarian I was hungry all the time! Without the extra protein I just couldn’t stay full. |
I definitely ate lots of fruits and vegetables before. I basically just dropped the meat and increased the beans and lentils and such. |
| Hi OP - I’ve been a vegetarian for so long that I can’t give advice on switching over. But to the PPs who say they only know vegetarians who eat candy and donuts…that is not normal. My meals are typically large amounts of vegetables with some protein and grains, and I snack primarily on fruit, nuts and sometimes popcorn. Hope your friends and loved ones stay in good health! |
Pescatarian, not vegetarian. Vegetarians don’t eat fish. |
| I did the purple carrot boxes and they were SO Good. Highly recommend for great plant based recipes. |
| beans and lentils are likely making you stay full longer (high fiber) - eat when you're hungry! glad its helped with the IBS - I would stay away from the meat replacement products (beyond/impossible) to continue on a good gut path |
