Why does MCPS need a "transition" period between in person and synchronous?

It seems like this is just catering to teachers. They already know how to do things online. Why can't it start immediately? Many teachers have already done a lot of things online during presumably "in person" instruction due to laziness about grading and because they don't have to make paper copies of things and basically everything having to do with convenience to themselves.

Why don't you just come out and say you hate teachers? It would be quicker.

There are teachers new to the county and new to the profession. They need time to figure things out. Not every county or every school did virtual learning the same way.

Today they announced 11 MCPS schools are going virtual. Tomorrow, those teachers will be teaching virtually. Is that fast enough for you?

Wow, you are one very angry person. I simply don’t understand how you can sit there and criticize the very people you leave your child with everyday. I get that this all sucks, really I do, but blaming teachers for your frustrations is simply juvenile. We need to make some changes to the district, the country, and laws for families but these are the same things that are also hurting teachers. As much as you think they are lazy and self centered they are actually dealing with same crap you are. The fear of their kids schools closing or their family having to quarantine is just as frustrating for them as it is for you. The anger is rational but you are not placing it on the right people.

he poster is upset at MCPS for their supervision of teachers and how they manage them. Some teachers will be lazy because it can be human nature for some people to be lazy and do the last amount of work. This has to do with MCPS leadership.

I used to be a teacher and I know some MCPS teachers. Of course they already know how to do things online (except the new hires - they need to learn). But some of the equipment is in the school buildings.

OP giving teachers 24 hours to switch from one system to the other is 100% reasonable. Maybe 110%. There are so many real issues within both the teacher's union and MCPS leadership. This is the wrong place to focus.

Well, to be fair, one of my kids' middle school teachers goes on a weekend trip every other weekend. As in flies to a different destination for a wedding/guys trip/football game. He's from Potomac (though doesn't teach there). He may be the rarity (none of her other teachers are like this) but I am totally irritated by it given how careful we are to keep our kids from getting covid. I'm sure he will love to be teaching online.

MCPS Chief of Teaching Learning and Schools Ruschelle Reuben said the 14-day period will begin with a “transition process” of asynchronous (or, not live) instruction.

I think the anger is directed at teachers who taught in person as if they were still virtual. My child has several teachers like this like doing "science" experiments virtually so there's no set up or clean up. It has been a big issue at some schools.

Maybe this is what they should cover during "professional development days"

Isn’t it just assumed?

How many people complain about the laziness of people in other professions who have been working from home for nearly two years? Do you complain about your lazy accountant, lawyer, and tech people because of where they are located while working? I'm a new teacher and have spent days trying to get ready if we go virtual. I've never done this before. Ditto for at least five of my colleagues who are also new teachers. Keep complaining and you will have even more new teachers to complain about since many teachers aren't coming back next year. I know four from my school alone who are quitting or retiring early.

Thanks. Comments like the original poster are one of the reasons why teachers are leaving the profession.
