Wootton’s COVID positivity rates may be due to old poorly ventilated building

Anonymous
My kids go to Wootton and when they were in Elementary school there was a plan to renovate Wootton where it would have been completed last year. Well for some reason the renovation was canceled by MCPS. Now we got a very old building and the highest COVID positivity rates. The building is old and there are many interior classrooms with no windows. @MCPS has failed those students. I am feeling litigious and want to sue. While Wootton was taken off the list to renovate, I see Whitman is getting a new addition

Knock yourself out. MCPS spends more on lawyers than on anything else. Which shows what their priorities are.

Maybe, maybe not. Come back when you have objective proof.

Says the MCPS staff attorney. Middle class people in MoCo have been ignored nearly since Wootton’s cornerstone was laid. That cluster has some of the oldest physical buildings but the kids do great - well, UMD college park great.

Pols don’t want to renovate BECAUSE Wootton parent don’t send enough money (Whitman is on its second Reno in 20 years) and aren’t the demographic liberal pols want - Gaithersburg high (new) and Seneca Valley (new) and on and on...

I actually think the middle school in that cluster is older (Robert Frost) but Dufief is finally getting a Reno after the lead-water scandal there a few years back.

DuFief is being pushed back again. All of the mcps projects are behind. It’s embarrassing that some of the buildings are in such a bad state.

Oh could that be the reason that PHS, which is in an old, crumbly, poorly ventilated building, and which is the oldest school in MCPS, had the outbreak? Perhaps the ahole COVID-Mary could not have done that much damage if it was a newer school building???

So when they say they spend $1.2 billion on "professional" personnel that's all for lawyers? That's fascinating. How do they pay the teachers?

They reported upgrading all the HVAC systems countywide last summer.

They did not do any such thing. No report of that.

In MCPS' defense, I heard it was only $11M spent on attorneys? And it's unfortunate that MCPS can spend $1.6M of covid money on the Kids Museum, but not on Wootton's renovation, though.

MCPS leadership doesn't even care about the basics anymore.

For those not clicking the link, all schools are listed as the status of this work being complete, and Wootton HS fell into this category:

"⧫⧫⧫ = Schools with recently replaced systems that have enhanced ventilation (limited spaces require air cleaners)

These schools have varying HVAC systems but generally have systems that can achieve ventilation and filter modifications to meet indoor air quality recommendations. Most of these systems have DOAS equipment and/or classroom units that achieve higher levels of ventilation air, and at rates that meet current recommendations. The schools in this category without DOAS equipment have classroom units that can modulate higher levels of ventilation airflow directly within the classroom HVAC unit and then ultimately mixed and distributed with filtered classroom air. Much of this work will not be visible, but we have have limited spaces with individual air cleaners."

Yes facts matter. 11 million is for 2017 numbers to fight parents who have kids on IEPs. Lord knows what is spent in 2021. Can you imagine the legal bills for Damascus? But apparently only some legal fees come directly out of MCPS - they basically have unlimited funds to fight families who fund THEM.

The school buildings in Florida are just as old and they have much lower cases than MD or Wotton and they’ve been in school longer and without masking.
