How to stop coughing

Covid cough won’t stop. Steroid inhaler, Albuterol, and cough meds on board and he’s still coughing constantly. Chest x ray is clear. Any ideas to help stop the cough?

Is this for an adult or a kid? If an adult, so you happen to have any Percocet, vicodin, hydrocodone or anything else with an opioid in it left over from a surgery or something? Opioids suppress cough. Thanks ne of the most effective cough suppressants is prescription cough syrup that contains codeine.

I would only go this route for a generally healthy adult on the younger side with no addiction issues, and only once to get a good nights sleep. And also only if you know what kind of illness you’re dealing with — like is this a lingering post illness cough or a new illness that is still unfolding. I once took a Percocet left over from a c section to help with coughing fits at night after getting over a virus, and it helped me get the sleep I need.

I know enough pharmacology and how my body reacts to opioids to feel comfortable doing this on a one time basis. YMMV.

It’s for a teen, but please don’t recommend this for anyone. Yikes.

PP again. Sorry I somehow missed that this is a Covid cough. Not sure I’d mess with that. I was thinking more along the lines of a cough that can last for a while after recovering from an illness and mess up sleep.

When I had whooping cough, advil/motrin helped me - I guess it's anti-inflammatory action? Warm mist humidifier?

What is bothering the teen about the cough?
can't sleep? chest hurts when coughs?

I would say the only things you can do is Mucinex DM, prop head up on extra pillows at night, humidifier, Vicks vapor rub, cough drops, the usual...
If wheezing/chest tightness then albuterol or steroid.
Time should help the most.

It’s just literally every 30 seconds- 1 minute so it’s exhausting him and making his chest sore. He’s already on Albuterol and a steroid inhaler, robatussin, and mucinex, so I guess we just roll with it at this point.

What are you using for cough meds?

Ibuprofen. Adults can safely take 600 mg. How much does he weigh? I’d do 600 every 6 hrs for the next 12 hrs.

Robatussin 8 hour cough gels and Mucinex (guafeninsin only)

If there’s any post nasal drip, do MucinexD, in addition to the albuterol. You need to dry up the drip. If that doesn’t work, call the doctor and demand the cough syrup with codeine. It’s still out there.

I have cough variant asthma and have had my whole life. It’s triggered after viral illnesses. If the mucinex D (or Robitussin plus Sudafed), albuterol, and steroids dont work, you’re going to need a narcotic to get some rest and break the cycle. You can also ask for Tessalon pearls. Those things are fantastic, you just have to be sure to swallow without breaking the pill.

High dose of oral prednisone (40-60 mg) for 5-7 days. I also have cough variant asthma and prednisone is the only thing thaf stops it. Ask an allergist about it, not a PCP.

Honey + the steroids too if that bad

Is he sleeping on his back or front? I find when I get a cold cough, sleeping on my back makes it worse. Sleeping on my stomach depressed the cough.
