I know I'm about to sound like a commercial, but I swear I'm not. I'm one of those people who never gets a holiday gift. So I decided to order one of the things that's been sitting on my Amazon list for ages - a whirly pop. It's a popcorn popping pot. I thought it was silly since I just pop in a regular pot, or sometimes in a paper bag in the microwave. But the microwave makes it taste stale and leaves a ton either unpopped or burnt. And the pot is a pain to shake and vent at the same time. So, OMFG, I love this thing! It took just a few minutes, was super simple, and the popcorn was perfect with not one single unpopped kernel.
I'm in love! That's all. Merry Christmas to me! |

I'm glad you like your Whilypop, OP.
Cook's Illustrated has a great stovetop popcorn recipe where you don't have to shake the pan! |

I just moved to a place where I can't get the microwave to make my damn microwave popcorn so I may get this, OP. I searched because I effin hate amazon though. Is this what I need to buy? which one?

| I gave all my siblings whirlypop pans for Christmas one year, OP. The next time we got together the nieces and nephews raved about the popcorn. The popcorn comes out perfect. |
I just have the original. I think with the nylon gears. I learned about it on Serious eats which mentions NOT getting the heavy bottom, for better heat transfer. I bought mine online from Tractor Supply, just because it was the cheapest at the time. |
| how easy is it to clean with all those small parts? this looks amazing op. We do popcorn often. |
|
Op again - I just made another batch and checked - I actually do have the metal gears.
As for cleaning, the pot is just a pot. Easy to clean. The lid and bottom stirring arms are easy enough to clean, just carefully with a sponge to get the oil off some nooks and crannies. |

Whirleypop is great, but if you're just using regular oil and salt you're not even close to the full flavor experience.
Get some butter flavored coconut oil to pop in, flavacol salt, and Snappy "buttery topping" and you've got full on movie theater popcorn. |
NP here who did the exact same thing! I love Serious Eats and Kenji’s YouTube cooking show. |
| I don’t have room for a whirleypop so I’ll post what I do incase it’s helpful to someone else. Heat 2 tablespoons of a neutral oil in a heavy bottom pot (such as all-clad). Put 3 kernels in and once they pop, add 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels. Pull the pot of the burner and count to 30. Put the pot back on the burner and put a lid on a hit ajar and wait until the popping stops. Perfect popcorn every single time and every single kernel is popped. |
| My DS 12 makes amazing popcorn in the whirlypop. It's his speciality and I now will eat no other popcorn. |
Same here! Can't imagine it getting much better than that, with grass fed butter and salt. |
| How high is the heat? |
I've never done this (I use a hot air popper), but know more than 1 person who started a kitchen fire doing this. |
| I feel so low class. I’m satisfied with microwave popcorn. I need to step my game up! |
