What will RD look like?

Anonymous
Given that a lot of private school kids seem to have gotten in ED/EA to T20 schools, what does that mean for RD? It sort of feels hopeless with 2-3 kids from each school already accepted, especially for unhooked kids.

What percentage of kids are getting in ED? 10%? 20%

That would be on par for any other year. RD will be the same.

Apply broadly and have 5 safeties.

I'm thinking absolute numbers. As an example, DC's class already has as many kids admitted to some top schools as in EA/ED and RD together in previous years. What are the odds of more getting in RD? DC actually got in EA so I'm not asking for advice, more wondering what's in store for the rest of their class, especially some of the super-talented deferred kids.

How do you know this? My dc’s school has absolutely forbidden them to talk about acceptances. So it’s hard to gauge what’s going on.

Our DC's school strongly suggests that kids keep chatter at a minimum and def no social media posts/sweatershirts at school. Nearly all hew to the latter with some having a sidekick post their admission, but the former - that ship has sailed. DC reported to me on anyone with whom DC is close friends +/or the family is close friends after having discussed with friends and I know that DC's friends were doing same with their parents.

Know a couple of kids from the last few years who did not get into an Ivy in ED and ended up with admits at one or more in RD. Ditto for kids interested in NESCACs, the T1--50, etc. Hoping that is the case for DC's good friend who was rejected at what seemed like a smart decision ED based on that kid's stats, etc.

Apply broadly and have 5 safeties.

This, and make sure they are actual safeties. I don’t care what stats your kid has. If they are not in or above the 75th percentile for both gpa and test scores (above 75th for GPA if applying test optional, and dig deep to find the 75th for specific programs like engineering or business if necessary), and if the school has an overall admit rate less than 70%, it is NOT a safety.

Do you think it's any different for public school kids from specific schools. It's the same thing.

It was always a very slim chance OP. This is news to you?

This really makes sense and was a source of conflict between us and DC/college counselor. Fortunately DC got in ED, but the two EAs submitted and the rest of the list did not have a single school with a 70% admit rate. DC has high, high GPA/test scores, but I kept saying "anything can happen." College counselor kept saying that the rest of the list was okay with schools in the 25-40% admit range. Again, fortunately ED came through as I was dreading the remainder of December.

Is that really necessary?

You are indeed lucky. That’s exactly how some very accomplished students end up stuck at community college for a year.
