Given that a lot of private school kids seem to have gotten in ED/EA to T20 schools, what does that mean for RD? It sort of feels hopeless with 2-3 kids from each school already accepted, especially for unhooked kids.
Apply broadly and have 5 safeties.
This, and make sure they are actual safeties. I don’t care what stats your kid has. If they are not in or above the 75th percentile for both gpa and test scores (above 75th for GPA if applying test optional, and dig deep to find the 75th for specific programs like engineering or business if necessary), and if the school has an overall admit rate less than 70%, it is NOT a safety.
This really makes sense and was a source of conflict between us and DC/college counselor. Fortunately DC got in ED, but the two EAs submitted and the rest of the list did not have a single school with a 70% admit rate. DC has high, high GPA/test scores, but I kept saying "anything can happen." College counselor kept saying that the rest of the list was okay with schools in the 25-40% admit range. Again, fortunately ED came through as I was dreading the remainder of December.
You are indeed lucky. That’s exactly how some very accomplished students end up stuck at community college for a year.
