Christmas cookie assortment - what categories of cookies do you make?

Anonymous
I have tons of cookie recipes saved and love trying new recipes but don’t have time to make everything I’d like to, and I have a huge sweet tooth so having tons of cookies in the house is not ideal.

I usually do a jam thumbprint cookie (request from one kid) and cutout cookies with frosting (both kids want those). My other cookies vary - sometimes a ginger cookie (soft or ginger snap), sometimes peanut butter blossoms (the kids like them, though I don’t like biting into a big Hershey’s kiss and would like to try a chocolate ganache filling instead), coconut macaroons dipped in chocolate, biscotti, shortbread, snickerdoodles, butter cookies, chocolate dipped pretzels or some form of chocolate cookie or dressed up brownie. And there are plenty more that I haven’t made but would like to try (iced oatmeal cookies or some kind of whoopie pie, lemon ricotta cookies).

Help me narrow it down. 😀 What are your must have cookies or types of cookies?

I love baking Christmas cookies and there are so many delicious ones. But the year I made 13 different kinds I decided to cut way back.

Now I ask my family to pick 1 favorite, my mom to pick 1 favorite, my in-laws to pick 1 favorite, and I try out 1 new recipe. I urge everyone to pick a different cookie than they did the year before -- sometimes they do, sometimes they want the tradition of the same thing year after year. Everyone gets a mix of all 4 cookies, and I get to feel good about giving everyone their fave.

There are excellent store bought shortbread and butter cookies, as well as chocolate-covered pretzels. Focus on the varieties that are best home made.

I forgot to note that grandma eats gluten free so we try to have options for her. The following cookies we make gluten free:
magic bars
drop sugar cookies
pb blossoms
bourbon balls
some of the pretzel/kiss
toffee
fudge

Our usual Christmas cookie spread:

Cutout sugar cookies
Jewel cookies (aka thumbprint cookies with jam)
Date bars
Chocolate peppermint cookies
Chewy molasses ginger cookies

I make peppermint bark, too, which I know isn’t a cookie but it’s so good!

Each family member picks their favorite and that is what I make. 5 in our family, so 5 different cookies. My favorite is peppermint bark. Don't know if that counts as a cookie, but I count it and make it!

Cut out sugar cookies (the kids always like to decorate some)
Double chocolate crinkle cookies
Pretzel/kisses with M&Ms
Peanut blossoms

Chex “blobs” (a no bake option- Wheat Chex with melted chocolate and caro syrup)

Spritz
Soft molasses orange
Peanut butter blossom (with the Hershey’s kiss)

It’s a good mix of kid friendly, different flavors/spices, and chocolate and non. I like that the spritz and peanut blossoms are bite size— good treats for kids begging for a cookie. The molasses are my personal favorite and, because of the spice, are less popular with kids. So they don’t eat them all!

I also like to make a tray or two of shortbread. It’s so easy and you can customize however you want. This is good for gifts and hostess gifts, I find. You can also be as simple or fancy (chocolate drizzle, cookie cut outs, dips, etc) as you want.

Are you all making full batches of all these cookies? If so, what do you do with them all?

Cookies I will have this year. Starred cookies I receive in an exchange.

I make platters of cookies for family gatherings and put them out as desserts for those gatherings. People look forward to my enormous cookie platters. It’s my thing.
