What is this about? |
Was this Hank? Wouldn't be the first time he selected a very weak player for the A team? |
So Hank Leung, former U.S. Women’s National Team and U.S. Women’s U-19 Youth National Team coach who won the NCAA collegiate women’s soccer championship in 1985 with George Mason University. A member of the D.C.-Virginia Soccer Hall of Fame and the former Director of Coaching at the Virginia Youth Soccer Association and the Eastern Pennsylvania Senior and Youth Soccer Associations, a three-time winner of the National Coach of the Year honor awarded by the NCAA, the W-League, and U.S. Youth Soccer......is not as good as picking soccer players as you[i][u]? ![]() ![]() |

Now that is a mic drop. |
I know that a VYS TD would agree with my opinion: Hank may be able to coach but in the past, he's picked some of the worst players in an age group for the A team. And even the coaching part is debatable, as kids that have played for him several years now have not progressed as you would expect. So the question is, if he is so great, why does he coach at VYS? How many (watered-down) State Cups has he led his VYS teams to?
But hey, he won some awards years ago so he must be great. Why don't you take your kid to VYS and find out? |
I can't gauge his A-team selections, but I'd say those are the most competitive VYS teams, and he's probably a big part of that. Not sure why people can't understand this -- it's going to be difficult for VYS to compete consistently with the traditional powerhouses in this region (all of which are still playing State Cup, for now -- just read the CCL press releases). Here's the simplest reason -- population: Loudoun County: 363,050 (yes, other clubs exist in Loudoun, but Loudoun is the biggest) Arlington: 226,908 (yes, a couple of other clubs operate in Arlington as well) Alexandria: 150,575 Reston: 58,404 McLean: 48,115 Herndon: 24,554 Fairfax City: 24,483 Chantilly: 23,039 Vienna: 16,459 Oakton is at 34,166, but a lot of those folks live closer to Fairfax or are equidistant to Reston and Chantilly. So I don't know why Hank has chosen to coach in Vienna. There's probably greater potential for girls soccer in Vienna than for boys because the male athletes in Vienna usually wind up in the Madison or Oakton baseball machines somehow. In any case, he and a couple more coaches are overachieving with a nice community club. Good for them. Now go pick on Reston or FPYC for a while. |
Arlington has only 1 other club besides huge ASA. PAC--and is sort of Fairfax County/Falls Church. The practices are in Merrifield in Fairfax. So you don't have any real options if you live in Arlington. Some of the much smaller population places listed have 4-5 clubs so a family has a lot more options. |
Very insightful post. Thank you! |

Funny how that traffic is only for those inbound to Vienna. People seem to find it's easy to drive away |
Restating the point: There's no inherent reason why VYS would should be "better" than the clubs around it. Regardless of how much driving people are willing to do to take kids to various A teams, that's maybe 5 percent of the soccer-playing population, and that's only after years of playing already. The overwhelming majority of kids will start playing soccer at their closest club. So does Arlington have an advantage over Vienna? Yes. Does Loudoun have an advantage over Chantilly? Yes. Braddock Road is the exception because of history. They're like the Green Bay Packers -- they joined up in the early days, had good management and stuck around. (And still, I worry a bit about their future now -- how long can they keep recruiting kids away from other clubs?) If a lot of Vienna kids are leaving Vienna for elite clubs, that actually speaks well to the job Vienna does at the younger age groups, does it not? The goal now is to get those kids to go VDA. |
Well if you're such an expert, then why aren't you taking his place? What is on YOUR resume, and what is YOUR experience that qualifies your opinion over his? |
Congrats to Madison HS for winning the region and reaching the state semifinals. |
