I know that a VYS TD would agree with my opinion: Hank may be able to coach but in the past, he's picked some of the worst players in an age group for the A team. And even the coaching part is debatable, as kids that have played for him several years now have not progressed as you would expect. So the question is, if he is so great, why does he coach at VYS? How many (watered-down) State Cups has he led his VYS teams to? But hey, he won some awards years ago so he must be great. Why don't you take your kid to VYS and find out?
I can't gauge his A-team selections, but I'd say those are the most competitive VYS teams, and he's probably a big part of that. Not sure why people can't understand this -- it's going to be difficult for VYS to compete consistently with the traditional powerhouses in this region (all of which are still playing State Cup, for now -- just read the CCL press releases). Here's the simplest reason -- population: Loudoun County: 363,050 (yes, other clubs exist in Loudoun, but Loudoun is the biggest) Arlington: 226,908 (yes, a couple of other clubs operate in Arlington as well) Alexandria: 150,575 Reston: 58,404 McLean: 48,115 Herndon: 24,554 Fairfax City: 24,483 Chantilly: 23,039 Vienna: 16,459 Oakton is at 34,166, but a lot of those folks live closer to Fairfax or are equidistant to Reston and Chantilly. So I don't know why Hank has chosen to coach in Vienna. There's probably greater potential for girls soccer in Vienna than for boys because the male athletes in Vienna usually wind up in the Madison or Oakton baseball machines somehow. In any case, he and a couple more coaches are overachieving with a nice community club. Good for them. Now go pick on Reston or FPYC for a while.
Very insightful post. Thank you!
