2024 Washington DC area College commits

None of these schools rank.
The colleges don't care about rank but they do care a lot about GPA. Whether you're coming from Field or Sidwell the top colleges want a 3.9.
It's only the top 10-15% kids at Sidwell that have this.
Anonymous
I bc a promise you that it’s a lot less than 15% who have a 3.9.

If the unhooked parents knew that their kid needed to be in the top 10% or at least top 15% at Sidwell, GDS, or STA to have any chance to get into a T25 college, a lot more people would choose public.

Sidwell doesn’t rank, or confer academic honors of any type (so there’s no cum laude society). Each college will have to figure out the “top 10% or at least top 15% at Sidwell” based only on who applies to that particular college.

Are you sure the counselor's letter doesn't give an idea of where the student stands relative to their peers?

Yep-this is where the secret sauce lies-in the letter you can’t see!!

The "much less rigorous" schools are sending 40% of their graduates to top 25 schools?

Potomac is not considered a top 5 school by most and their stats look pretty amazing.

Would disagree with this and most top schools you see listed as a kid of legacy/athlete and trustees. Wait until end of year to decide if more too 25 for unhooked.

This is 100% correct except for a couple of the Duke admits that were unhooked but top students. The legacies/hooked students were mostly top notch that everyone would agree on. Will be very interesting to see how RD plays out for the unhooked indeed across the board!

The Duke admits we know were definitely hooked. Good students but there are a lot of good students. You need a hook.

Wishful thinking on your part.

Based on Instagram posts, 83% of Sidwell’s c/o 2023 posted their college destinations. Based on those posts, 17/125 (13.6%) are currently attending Ivies. I personally know 4 students from that class who didn’t post. They are freshman at Ivies this year (21/125=16.8%). There were also several 2023 Sidwell grads who were admitted to more than one Ivy that year, so the overall Ivy admissions rate is higher than 16.8%.

In terms of top 25 colleges/universities, 54% of Sidwell’s c/o 2023 who posted on Instagram landed at top 25 colleges. Even if those were the only students attending top 25 colleges (they’re not), that’s still a whopping 46% of the total graduating class. In other words, it’s safe to say that Sidwell sent at least 50% of its c/o 2023 graduates to top 25 colleges and universities.

What public school in this area is sending more than half of its students to top 25 colleges?!? Please feel free to look up the Sidwell Instagram page I’m referencing.

Sidwell does NOT compute GPAs—there is no number on the transcript. Each college will have to compute the GPA themselves. So how will a college know who is “top 10-15%” unless every Sidwell senior applies that year?

Wrong. Facts say private kids get in at a much higher percentage.

The real news is that kids at easier privates coming in with 3.8 and 3.9 GPA’s or 93 grade average are raking in the admission spots at top colleges while kids coming from notoriously higher ranked schools with 3.5-3.7 school averages are getting shut out. Never believed it until I saw it. Exception is STA with I think a 92 or 93 class average which is serving them well.

So what does this mean? You all were right - GPA matters more than anything else.

STA does not have a 92/93 class average. It's more like an 89. 92/93 is where the elite college admissions start.

A lot of kids have 91-93 averages at sta which equals a 3.7-3.85 ish

No, a 91 is a 4.0. A 91 is an A at just about any school, even STA. If you are doing a 4.0 then an A is an A.

Sidwell computes a GPA when kids are juniors, and they know where the kids stand from the counselor's letter.

As far as about half of kids getting into T25 schools, it is true, but is us mostly recruited athletes, URM, VIP parent kids, and top 10% kids plus many top 10-15% kids with legacy.

Sidwell has way more VIP parents and legacy than a public.

Not at NCS. A 91 is a 3.7

On a standard 4.0 scale a 91 is an A- which is a 3.7.

92 is not an A at Sidwell, it is the dreaded A-minus. A-minus=3.7 when GPA is calculated, so it hurts bad in college admissions. You need 93% for an A at Sidwell.
Anonymous
I am an expert on A-minus because my DC has several of them.

Sidwell also has way more parents who can be full pay at $80k a year, meaning their kids can apply ED, than a public where lots of kids are waiting on FA packages. Ivies don't give merit aid, either (ask me how I know).
