Best Way to Influence DC Redistricting?

Anonymous
There appears to be a new Ward 6/7 map to create a gerrymandered carve out of Kingman Park proper, etc. out of Ward 7 and into Ward 6. According to some talk in the neighborhood, local officials such as former ANC Coomber have been pushing for such a carve out for years to help keep their political options open for a run for city council.

While it is nothing new for politicians to try to choose their own constituents, does anyone have suggestions about the best ways to push back on such a gerrymander?

Bro, just accept that an anti-Semite will now make your Navy Yard related decisions for the next 10 years. I’m sure your concerns about pot holes and other important issues will be addressed quickly.

+1. Given they outright said the maps were drawn with the aim of 'not diluting voting power EOTR' (ie with the aim of not giving a shit that the people moved would have zero voting power), the only thing you can do is use your money to finance a good primary competitor, various information or misinformation campaigns, etc. Basically do what the Republicans have been doing the last 20 years.

I didn't want to get moved because I wanted my vote to matter, and because they said all along that anyone moved would be moved so that they couldn't sway the political decisions for that Ward. But I'm sure if I publicly said that, I'd be called racist too. Really I just want my councilmember to have to give a fck about my vote.

Him going the way of Harry Thomas Jr. is the only way you'll get out of it. The replacement will probably be just as bad.

I think the main goal was to preserve black voting power and economic diversity in Ward 6 by keeping SW and Kingman Park/Rosedale. Incorporating those neighborhoods out those neighborhoods into W7/W8 would have just made W6 whiter and wealthier, which the council did not want to do.

If you look at the map, there's a good argument that Kingman Park/Rosedale are a "community of interest" that should be kept together with the rest of the Hill. Personally I think that the rest of Hill East should stay in Ward 6 for that same reason.

I would be freaking out if that fool was going to be my councilmember.

I live in the little area around 11th Street that was unexpectedly added to Ward 7 (after not being an option in any of the "final" three maps), and we've been told that Chairperson Mendelson will have unilateral control of the maps between the subcommittee markup and introduction of the map to the Committee of the Whole, so he's who you should email/reach out to, along with the rest of the City Council who will be the ultimate deciders. FWIW, Mendelson lives in the area so will understand the various issues at play.

Vince Gray has mostly been a pretty good Council member (though he seems to be getting a bit senile) and Yvette Alexander before him was also fine so I don't have too much sympathy for people whining about getting moved into Ward 7.

Ward 8 on the other hand - whew - Trayon is nuts and not very bright either and he is young so that seat could be his for decades.

Very few people vote in Ward 8 so shouldn’t be hard to unseat him.

How is it not racist to just openly say “we won’t dilute the voting power”? Imagine if the opposite was said. It’s as if some people are supposed to have more of a right than others or should have their vote preserved in amber for ever.

I'm white and my councilmember, Brianne Nadeau, doesn't give a fck about my vote. More like welcome to the world of mere citizens in DC politics.

My also-white councilmember.

You do realize that Trayon is Ward 8 and not 7 right? Vincent Gray is Ward 7. Hillcrest is in Ward 7 which is beautiful and lovely. If you were moving into Ward 8 I would see a problem, but 7 is fine. WTF?
