Stepsons cat marking in my gorgeous house! : (

Anonymous
My stepson needed to move in with us temporarily until his home is cleaned up after smoke damage from a nearby fire. Our newly renovated home has plenty of room. We have cats and a dog in the house. He had to bring his cat of course. I was really worried about his cat marking because of being misplaced and stressed. At first she was fine but now I found two areas she’s marked on and the smell! Ugh It’s my worse nightmare. Cat pee permeating throughout my designer home! How do you manage this potential nightmare situation?

Tell him the cat needs to be boarded by the end of this week, and tell him to research how to fix the cat problems in your house. Then he has to pay for it.

It's your worst nightmare? Wow, sounds like you're really grateful that your stepson wasn't killed or injured in a fire.

Can you just have the cat stay in the room where he is staying? That wouldn't work long-term, but if it's for a few weeks that cat might feel safer in its own space.

Plot twist: it is the stepson marking everywhere because he is misplaced and stressed!

Also if you ask your SS to get some large bottles of nature's miracle, soak the area and let it dry, that will help so much with the smell.

Is the cat spayed? If not, spay surgery immediately.

Otherwise: for the urine spots, +1 to Nature's Miracle. Soak the spot and the enzymes "digest" the urine as it dries. Very effective.

I've also had good luck with the Woolite carpet and upholstery cleaner in the aerosol can with scrubbing tip.

For the cat: confine to your son's room if possible. Put a shower curtain liner or other plastic sheeting down around the litter box. Litter box must be kept scrupulously clean. Also you might want to try Feliway plugins--if the cat hasn't been around other animals, she is probably stressed.

Yes cat is spayed . I’ll order natures miracle ASAP. I did tell him to confine the cat in his room. I guess having to have one room professionally cleaned is better than the whole house. Also I did tell my husband to mention to his son to make sure he is keeping her litter box clean! I didn’t want to ask his son this stupid question.

Oh my... just tell the kid he's no longer welcome in your perfect home as he's not perfect.

If the litter box is clean, it’s likely stress, which unfortunately can take months to resolve.

I’d have him take the cat to a vet to see if there’s any short term medication they can put it on to mellow it out.

Another nose blind person who should live in a cave I presume.

Designer home? Really?

Cat peeing is absolutely awful, but get natures miracle and good rug cleaner and see if the cat can be confined to a non-carpeted area like a laundry room.

Yes a designer home we spent millions on. Guess if the cat was peeing in my double wide I wouldn’t be so upset.
