5 hour flight that will cost our family at least $800/trip. How often would you feel like you had to visit and who pays for the flights?

You pay for flight. I would visit once a couple of years. I hope the place they moved to is nice and you are able to make a vacation out of it (or can at least enjoy your time with them)

I would probably visit once a year for a longer time (at least a week). We would pay for out trip. I would encourage them to visit us too (they would pay for their trip). It would probably workout to be a summer visit and a December visit.

My parents moved from being a 7 hour road trip north of here to a 7 hour trip south of here. They would visit once a year and we would go 3x- DH would not always come but I would take the kids and drive. I wanted my kids to have a relationship with them, so we made frequent trips. If they had been further away, we would have gone less frequently but for more time for each visit.

It costs about that much to visit my parents. They also live in a somewhat remote place so travel time is tough— full day of travel including flight plus multi-hour drive, each way.

We have not been since before Covid, but every other year is about right to me. Otherwise it’s sucks up so much of our travel funds and vacation time. As they age I might go more often, but not necessarily with my entire family.

When we go there, we pay fir flights. Never cheaper than $500/pp. it’s annoying to me, as they used to live 20 minutes away. I go once a year, but haven’t been in two years because of Covid. They come here 2-3x a year, but also to see friends. They pay for those.

That was obviously a different poster. They replied that they visit once a year but their costs are $3000 for the family.

I’m the OP, the person who said $3k was not me. $800 is the cost for all four of us to fly.
