The point is that when my ancestors (also Russian Jews) came here, when Ellis island welcomed the poor and hungry, they had to support themselves. THAT is why the borders were so open! If half of all immigrants quickly ended up on welfare, with American taxpayers supporting them, you would have seen the borders shut.

So, to reiterate the other PP's point, you can have either a) a wide open immigration policy or b) a generous welfare system in which all needy get food, housing, medical, and other benefits. You cannot have both.

Dominican Republic expells Haitians. I want an accounting of all the money we've - taxpayers- have sent to Haiti. What's next? The mismanaged, mis-governed Venezuela?

This isn't the USA in the 1800's. We are built -out and have enough people who need to get employed and areas to fix.

Other than the fact that there is a lot of snow, Norway is a nice country in which to live. Oslo is a lot like Washington - small and somewhat provincial. The Vigeland Sculpture Gardens are exquisite, even though the entrance gates bear swastikas, which were prominent in the Art Deco movement. Lots of cross country skiing in the winter, berry picking and reindeer spotting in the summer or the 8 weeks of summer. Midnight sun is great. It's kind of hard to argue that many of these countries are not shitholes. Burkina Faso has a literacy rate of 38%. Niger's per capita GDP is $400/year. Over 25% of Swaziland's population has AIDS and the average lifespan mirrors that of England in 1750. Rwanda is full of corpses and Sierra Leone has many people going about with limbs hacked off. Haiti, I don't even know where to start. It is impossible to argue against simple facts and statistics like this. They are awful places to live, full of malaria, yellow fever, schistosomiasis, cholera, typhoid, and other diseases that doctors here barely know how to treat because they never see them. The governments are corrupt and they periodically descend into civil war.

But the countries being shitholes does not mean that the people in them are. And that's what is implied in Trump's statement, and his immigration policies, and why it's so abhorrent. How many Americans today trace their roots back to Ireland? That would for sure have qualified as a shithole in those days, particularly during the Potato Famine. Nobody came to America for the last 400 years because they had a prosperous, lovely life--if that had been so, they would have stayed there. But people conveniently forget that, because they want to come and then pull up the ladder behind them and pretend it didn't happen.
