My child tested 251 on MAP R and is not in CES, it proves the system is messed up!

Your thinking is messed up. Obviously your child lacked on other measures and didn’t make the cut.

Is your kid alone at your ES like this or are there some others? Do they have the enriched literacy curriculum available there?

CES is only focused on ELA!

I have no idea what other children's MAP R scores are but I know my child scores a lot higher than some of the CES kids!

That’s true, and I’m sorry they didn’t make it into the program. But that doesn’t mean the system is messed up. If another kid doesn’t have access to similarly advanced classmates or an enriched curriculum at their home school, they might get priority. No idea if you have solid enrichment available, but many schools do not. Still, your child would probably have enjoyed the program and I sympathize.

I think they should have tested them again in G4 to access where everyone is instead of not getting enriched for 2 years straight.

That really isn’t true. They do a lot more science and because the group is bright and motivated, move faster and deeper in just about everything. The “only ELA” thing is just a line they give parents to convince them that the home school ELA will be the same. Not that home school ELA enrichment is nothing! But no one who has seen the CES in action really thinks it is the same.

There are going to be a lot of high scoring kids who are not in the CES, since last year was a lottery for kids beyond a certain threshold. It sucks, but maybe instead of complaining here you could advocate for more enrichment at your home school?

I'm curious to find out what your child's MAP scores are!

My child took the CES test 2 years ago in G3 and was not a lottery then.

Ah. Back then, they used COGAT. You should have received the scores for that, too. That is supposed to measure innate ability over learned content. Kids who may have the ability to do enriched work, but haven’t had the same exposure to advanced content as other kids have a chance to be identified and offered enrichment. So your child may have lost a place to a child who showed a higher COGAT score but didn’t have the same opportunities for enrichment, perhaps at home.

Still, I hope your child gets enrichment at the home school. Sounds like you are providing some at home, and that is great.

My kid was in private in 5th grade and didn’t take the test then, but was in the low 260s for Map R and mid 260s for Math M in 6th grade. Lots of kids with higher scores.

Is the lottery system to stay or was is just due to Covid?
