If your daughter doesn’t like “Virginian” culture, she’s probably trying to tell you that she doesn’t want to go to college in Virginia. It’s not that deep. Too sophisticated? Find a more urbane atmosphere in a more urban setting. Likely not a state flagship. Or head overseas like a previous poster has suggested.

UVA has a very private feel. You would never know it's public.

This made me chuckle. As if all public universities are dumps, except..UVA

They didn't say that at all. So cut the eye roll. William and Mary for example, has a very private feel.

Private schools in Virginia probably also have a Virginian vibe. It’s Virginia. OP’s daughter doesn’t object to a public feel, just to a Virginian feel.

But what is “a Virginia feel”? I’ve lived in CA, Mass, DC, Israel, London, LA and VA for the 25 years but couldn’t tell you what “a Virginia Feel” is from a N Carolina feel. Or a Maryland feel etc

I couldn’t either, but apparently OP’s daughter could say.

+1. LOL. It's true. I live in charlottesville and have no idea what "a Virginia feel" means.

But yes, I do mean distaste. She's not interested in something that is centered around Viriginian culture.

Haha what is Virginian culture?

It's fascinating to me that there is so little perspective on oneself that you don't even realize different places have different cultures. Yes, including Virginia EVEN THOUGH YOU RAISED YOUR KIDS HERE. These are the same people who would trash U Alabama or whatever.

Yes, why are people so sensitive about this?

Born and raised Virginian here and I assume it’s like an accent — I don’t hear one, but if I go to New York I’m told I have one.

I don’t have an issue with saying there’s a “Virginian feel” even if I have no idea what that means. I have an issue with someone being disdainful of Virginians, however. The daughter doesn’t seem to like Virginia or Virginians, so she should probably not go to school here.

I don't think the "it has a private feel" comment was meant to be a flex. My child is at UVA and wishes it had more of a public school feel. Almost all OOS students are private/boarding school kids and are overwhelmingly white and wealthy.

That didn’t get into an Ivy school, and now are helping support my in-state student with their OOS $$$$. No need to socialize with the wealthy private boarding high school kids. There are enough public VA kids to hang out with. My kid is in a sorority, and most of her friends are VA public school grads, some from rural areas as well, who have side jobs to help pay their sorority dues.

did OP ever let us know if her D is in fact a Virginian?

OP seems to have left the chat after being shocked — simply shocked — that people reacted negatively to the disdain of her sophisticated and worldly daughter.

That view does not comport with UVA’s diversity statistics

We are middle class from Northern Virginia. I am glad my kid can meet those students from wealthy OOS families. They get to see what kind of lifestyle they can have through hard work, focus on academics and networking.

Not all public universities are dumps. Not at all. I'm just saying that there are some public universities that don't feel like they're public and that UVA happens to be one of them. Some private universities feel public. It's a spectrum. UVA is on the far end of the 'is public feels private' spectrum.
