What’s the deal with TN?

TN is a great state and Knoxville is a charming small city. You can give it a chance, or you can sit comfortably in your prejudices. Either works for me.

+1 definitely!

Sending your child to the suburbs of Boston (a place known to have had racial segregation and issues for decades) to spend more time with black people instead of letting them live in any Southern state (where most of the black people in this country live and--this may shock you--actually hang out with white people) is absurd.

We are in-state in TN and my child's tuition at UTK next year will be $5K. I am elated. I went to a top DC private and university, both of which DCUM posters are obsessed with. I am liberal and so is my community in TN. My children and I have diverse friend groups.

If you are sending your child to a private university and spending $400K on their education, I am here to let you know that you are not placing them in a "diverse" environment in any way.

+100. Game, set, match.

We're from N. VA and my son also went to a well known and discussed high school on this board. He's at UTK and is happy, thriving and loves the school. He was offered great merit aid that made tuition more affordable than UVA.

I agree 100% with your statement *spending 400K on education is not diverse*. Anyone who thinks BC, Williams, Tufts, are diverse are fooling themselves. Laughable.

So interesting about a 2027 admit offer, never heard of that! Also, the interest in southern schools from liberal DMV people is interesting, particularly because those schools tend to skew conservative.

Are you sure? These are R1 flagships with top researchers in liberal college towns. You might want to check your bias.

This is true but UTK has a very conservative culture and was considered one of the most homophobic colleges anywhere in the US

We're from N. VA and my liberal freshman son at UTK said the opposite. He doesn't feel a political bias on campus or with his new friend group. He called a couple weeks ago to tell me that Planned Parenthood was on campus handing out condoms and Plan B as we've had serious discussions about unplanned pregnancies and the consequences. My worries weren't justified and I've grown to love UTK.
