The notion that a parent would spend $100K/year to send their child to Tufts or the like to get a diverse college experience is laughable. Sending your child to the suburbs of Boston (a place known to have had racial segregation and issues for decades) to spend more time with black people instead of letting them live in any Southern state (where most of the black people in this country live and--this may shock you--actually hang out with white people) is absurd.
We are in-state in TN and my child's tuition at UTK next year will be $5K. I am elated. I went to a top DC private and university, both of which DCUM posters are obsessed with. I am liberal and so is my community in TN. My children and I have diverse friend groups. If you are sending your child to a private university and spending $400K on their education, I am here to let you know that you are not placing them in a "diverse" environment in any way. |
+100. Game, set, match. |
I don't see any post where any poster said that NE colleges have more AA diversity than SEC schools. Can you cite? Side note, UTK being 5% AA is not diverse so you can't paint all SEC schools with same brush |
8:12 The claim suggests Tufts has diversity that represents its state yet nobody can cite Tuft’s AA percentage. |
Tufts is roughly 6% Black https://datausa.io/profile/university/tufts-university#:~:text=The%20enrolled%20student%20population%20at%20Tufts%20University%20(168148)%20is%2043.5,American%20Indian%20or%20Alaska%20Native. Mass is roughly 6% Black: https://www.censusdots.com/race/massachusetts-demographics |
+100 So sick of blowhards like the poster bragging that her kid’s “NE private” is somehow more diverse than a large state school in the South (or anywhere). Spare us all. |
Speaking of “not quite the flex you think it is,” your kid is opting to go to a school where everyone there is just like them. So much for your concern about diversity!

To be very clear. I am the poster that said schools like Tufts represent the state where it is. I'm the "HBCU" mom. I want to be very clear, I am not saying Tufts is a diverse school at all. Not in any capacity. However, I don't expect much in terms of diversity for a school that is in white state like MA. Again, my kid didn't even apply anywhere north of PA. I wholeheartedly agree with you all that the southern schools are far more diverse. I was simply pointing out that my expectations are low. That said, I can also be disappointed that public schools like UTK don't come nowhere near representing the states they supposedly serve. That also said, I'm also impressed with schools like LSU and Alabama that are more diverse. |
DP. How on earth is it “problematic” that black students choose to apply elsewhere? You can’t force certain demographics to apply to certain schools just to up the diversity scores. Good grief. Quit the social engineering. |
+1 It’s so telling when people make statements with nothing to back them up. And then tell you it’s *your* responsibility to prove (or disprove) it. If you make a claim, provide a citation to back it up. |
DP. Public universities should serve the entire population of the state, so when you see disproportionately low participation by any group that is cause for concern. That said, WI is only about 6% black and black attendance by income appears to roughly track other demographics. So this is arguably a case where the issue is serving lower income populations ineffectively. |
Very much so. My concern for diversity is because we ARE in the minority group in this country. One where nooses are no longer considered a hate symbol. Walk a mile in our shoes and I dare you not to want safety and belonging during these times. I'm not trying to flex, I'm supporting my kid's desire to be in a safe and nurturing environment. But if you're that concerned, you'll be happy to know my kid is on track to also get a dual degree from GA Tech as well. |
This is true but UTK has a very conservative culture and was considered one of the most homophobic colleges anywhere in the US |

That is not what PPs said. A PP expressed an expectation that the diversity of a college (especially a state college) match that of its state. Tufts in fact does while UTK's does not. For what it's worth Ole Miss is over 10% Black but that is MUCH lower than the Black population of the state (around 30%). In any case, I have no problem with the SEC schools and understand why a lot of students love them. What I find downright weird is how many posters claim that they are MORE desirable than the private colleges in the Northeast. When you compare the numbers of applicants between say Alabama and NYU (roughly same size schools), NYU has twice as many. And of course the acceptance rates and yield rates are even more spread apart. |
