Nukes aren’t actually hot enough to instantly vaporize people unless you’re standing extremely close to the warhead.

The center is millions of degrees but outwards you’re talking more in the low thousands and the pulse of thermal infrared light is ridiculously brief. It’s enough to ignite anything flammable like clothes and wood houses but it’s not going to instantly turn an entire human body into gas.

What will kill you almost instantly is the blast wave that follows within a few seconds. If you’re in direct line of sight your clothes and hair will catch fire, your skin will start to burn, you’ll be blinded. But if you’re close enough to experience the searing heat of a nuke the blast will rip you apart before you’ve suffered long. If you’re close to ground zero but not in direct line of sight you’ll still be killed by the blast either directly or from falling buildings and debris. You do have a very slim chance of survival if in the right kind of shelter, there were people in Hiroshima who survived almost directly beneath ground zero who were in concrete buildings. Obviously that bomb was weaker than modern bombs but still.

The WWII bombs were anything BUT “huge”. They were incredibly small in terms of yield.

Most strategic nuclear warheads today are in the 300-500 kiloton range - making them 20 to 50 times more powerful than the WWII bombs.

And this level of power is actually far smaller than previous generations of early/mid Cold War weapons, which had yields in the megatons, instead of kilotons. But as missiles and other delivery systems became more accurate, the size of the warheads was down-sized for better efficiency. No need for a 30 megaton aircraft-deployed bomb when a 300 kiloton missile-delivered weapon is more accurate.

Because I’m an expert on nuclear weapons. Ours mostly, obviously. Specifically, I used to work for a government contractor that dismantled our older weapons and recovered various materials for refurbishment and re-use. That’s really about all I can say about it.

I’m in a medical-diagnostics-related field now, but I’m still the biggest nuclear expert you’ll likely ever interact with.
