If DC or Arlington are hit with a nuclear bomb

It depends where you live. If you are east and south of the place of detonation, you are dead. Nova is a huge target with all the military stuff. Those in western MoCo will be safest and most would survive.

This is not going to happen.

Right?

Probably not but I’m kind of hoping it does. I’ve found living in 2025 to be exasperating.

As PP said -- it depends. Bomb by terroist? Smaller weapon. 5 miles puts you outside of danger then a lot depends on wind and weather in the 24 hrs after the bomb. Attack from the Soviet Union back in the day -- much worse. China is not really a threat. They could hit us but only in a limited way. They would not want the return fire. Very unclear if Russia has enough to do real damage. They could send some but again the US would wipe them out. Smaller nuke powers not likely to attack us becasue they could only do some damage and the blowback would be hard.

Currently, the most likely issue would be terrorists with a small bomb.

What do you pack for the afterlife?

What are the smartest next steps if you survive the initial detonation? Shelter in your basement or try to get out of town?

I would say shelter in place. The roads would all be parking lots.

Where are you going to go? And how are you going to get there? None of the cars will work because of EMP. You gonna walk through the radiation fallout?

Unfortunately it’s a distinct possibility.

In the event of a nuclear conflict, DC is probably not high on the list of first strike cities. If DC is hit, there is no more command and control and the conflict goes from limited to full-scale global annihilation. That wouldn't be could for anyone.

A foreign power would more likely attack Colorado Springs or Omaha. Both strategic nuclear command centers. Or some place of military significance, like Bahrain and the fifth fleet combined with Hawaii to take out the Pacific fleet.

Terrorist attack? Who knows.

Yeah, they would skip right over the pencil pushers in the Pentagon.

Shelter in your house with as little air exchange as possible. I think you want to be on the second floor if you still have one as the fallout settles. The longer you can avoid contact with outside the better, hopefully the wind is blowing the other way that day.

The problem with hitting DC is that the military goes on auto-destroy everything. Every sub missile, aircraft, land-based missile will be launched. Neither Russia nor China want that. So yes, they skip over the Pentagon pencil pushers, White House and Congress. This is not 1960 anymore.

It would be an act of symbolism. It would boost morale of our enemies and demoralize the US . DC is high on the list.
