Goodness! You think it’s stupid for APS to offer kids a class at their level? Getting on this track was a blessing for my kid. It was the first time she wasn’t bored. Straight As all the way
through and a 4 on AP Calc B jr year. Loved AP Calc BC btw. And she’s not even a STEM kid. Going to major in humanities in college. Some kids really do benefit from this acceleration. If it isn’t for your kid, that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean others should not be on it.

A 4 on an AP exam is nothing to brag about. If not a 5, it shouldn’t be included on college application.

Last year APS wanted to see a 236+ on the Math-MAP to go into pre-algebra in 6th.

Does anyone know what MAP score APS targets for the end of pre-algebra?

I thought the SOLs were more important, though other tests were considered also.

Last year, the cut off was MAP 236+ and SOL 550+. The letter had the numbers for Cogat (126+) but this cohort didn’t take the official test due to covid. My kid didn’t have cogat scores but was placed in pre-algebra.

Last year APS required students to meet the score cutoffs for both the MAP test and the SOL.

Thanks for the info.

Appeals do happen and go to your school's local math coach.

+1. Parents have the final say.

I know parents who were ignored.

I reached out to the math coach at Gunston, provided some background about my kid being a very hard worker and the coach immediately revised his placement to be in prealgebra for 6th grade. He has done well in math with no issues - 600 on the math SOL for algebra. you know your kid best.

I agree and am glad they moved your kid so easily. I had to fight much harder, but that was a few years ago. Maybe it’s a different person now. Anyway, kid is in HS and still doing very well in math.

Does anyone know when we get the math SOL scores back?

I tried to get mine in Algebra and didn't succeed. Kid was so board in class that they started doing the Algebra work...teacher eventually started giving harder work. Not sure what's going to happen next year when they've already done much of the work...
