False. We know 3 kids who went from math 6 to pre-algebra. |
|
Do you mean algebra I? |
But did they eat beats? |
They can go into either, I believe. |
|
I don’t believe there is regular algebra 1 or geometry in middle school, just intensified.
And yes you can go to algebra 1 from math 6 if the parent opts to override the recommendation. But that would be unadvisable to just completely skip 2 years of SOLs. But, you do you. It would never be an APS recommended placement to do that. |
DHMS now offers both regular and intensified Algebra 1. That may be a change from when they added intensified to MS. |
There is https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/MS-Pathways-SY21.pdf |
Nowhere on that page does a student go from Math 6 to Alg 1 directly. Only pre-algebra for 6th graders go to Alg 1 in 7th. |
There is a non-intensified algebra |
|
Yes, I see they have added non-intensified Alg 1 and geometry in middle school. That is fairly new, it used to be only intensified offered for these high school courses.
Again, in all pathway options you can only go to algebra 1 (any variant) from pre-algebra, whether you take pre-algebra in 6, 7, or 8th grade. Pre-algebra is considered Math 8 and you take the Math 8 SOL at the end of the pre-algebra course. I haven’t heard of a student going from regular math 6 directly to Algebra 1, but I’m sure a parent could insist. However do understand that Algebra 1 and Geometry taken in middle school (along with the other high school language classes and world geography) show up on your students’ high school transcript. You do also have the option to drop them as a senior if you want, as long as you satisfy the number of credits needed in high school years. |
| I don't think a student could go from Math 6 directly into Algebra. They would not be prepared for Algebra. The accelerated pathway bunches math 6-7-8 together in one year (6th grade) to prepare students to go right into Algebra. |

APS only offers intensified Algebra 1 in 7th grade, but they have always offered both regular and intensified Algebra 1 in 8th grade. |
My kids said some kids did it at their middle school. They had to get extra help after school from the teacher but some of those kids did well in the class. |
