That was my opinion until I actually visited. Lovely place.

Same here.. it's a beautiful city

Same here! Visited Pittsburgh because we were touring CMU. Really enjoyed Pittsburgh to my surprise and ended up liking Pitt better than Carnegie Mellon! Very cute area with great school communities.

Cathy! And the rest of what everyone said. My Class of 2020 Pitt grad loved her time there.

NP, We were also pleasantly surprised, however I've never heard/seen the adjective "lovely" used to describe Pittsburgh or any other major American city.

Well, I lived there for 4 years and it is indeed "lovely."

NP here - but I was honestly shocked by how pretty Pittsburgh is when I visited a couple years ago. The rivers, the neighborhoods. Everything. It has great museums, cute artsy districts. I would live there in a heartbeat if I could.

Pitt grad here. Pittsburgh seen from Mt. Washington or looking at the Point head-on is truly a beautiful sight. Cruising down the river on the dining cruises is another way to see that sight. Pitt's campus has the Cathedral of Learning which is one of the tallest university buildings in the world, not to mention having an inspirational back story. William Pitt (student) Union used to have the comfiest velvet couches in its elegant open access sitting rooms - great for a short catnap while taking summer classes. Heinz Chapel is a copy of St. Chapelle in Paris. Carnegie Library/Museum has a ton of world class art and fossils. Frick Fine Arts Building is a replica of an Italian villa with murals of famous art works. Hillman Library was immortalized in Michael Chabon's "Mysteries of Pittsburgh". Phipps Conservatory is a 10 minute walk up the street from the campus. Some highlights around town include the Andy Warhol museum, the Heinz History Center, and the revived hipster areas close to downtown. I don't live in Pittsburgh now but would happily go back if I could find a job there.

Anonymous wrote:We live in a Pittsburgh suburb (used to live in DC). Dd did not apply as a senior in high school for various reasons. Did not like the school she chose and transferred to Pitt as a second semester sophomore. From day 1, she has had an incredible experience. She has met other nice students and has had great professors. She is in arts & sciences and is not a stem major. She has relationships with many professors and has kept in touch with them after the class is over. Her friends who graduated last year all either got a good job or into a good grad school program. She loves being in the city and it is an easy city to navigate. I can’t say enough good things about Pitt.

+1. This is so nice to hear.

How strong is the alumni network in the DMV?

I love Pittsburgh and we loved Pitt when we toured it. Sadly, my 4.0 son received a "pass along mid-year grades and then we'll consider letting you in" letter. He's in at Penn State, University Park, so he's ok. But I found that annoying. So Pitt is not to be for him. But still love Pittsburgh!

If your son likes an urban campus, may want to do what is requested and see what happens.

Sounds like yield management kicked in or there's some bobble on his transcript.

What intended major?

Why would you pay out of state for pitt if GMU has a good cs program

Most likely applied late. Pitt is easier to get into in August and September. Late October applications had a higher standard to meet.

Affordable, great smallish city, good food options, close to the DMV, and many high quality undergrad program. Plus Tesla, Google, etc., coming in has really helped change the city a lot. I don't know of anyone out of state who goes there who doesn't love it. It is interesting to see so many DMV kids going there - that feels very new. Always felts like the PA public school of choice was/is Penn State. But, Pitt is surely attracting a lot of kids.

Bitterly cold? Hahaha.

My kid is at Pitt and concerned it won’t get cold enough. Loves winter.
