UVA vs GMU

And only these 2 choices ~

Guessing this is speculation and not an actual scenario.

My son is in it. Fantastic. And they are committed to working with local industry to help your kid get a job. Hope it remains a sleeper school!!

+100
Great, great program.

Said one poster. Ever.

There are several posters here who have been praising GMU, and rightfully so. Try to keep up.

I actually prefer strayer grads for that no. Traditional GMU work ethic..

Not to mention disingenuous, and likely one poster in multiple personas answering his or her own questions...

Is GMU even ranked in the top 100 for CS? Of course not.

GMU has its purpose, and is a fine school--but let's not get carried away. It's logical competition is VCU not UVA...

+1

GMU is ranked 67 in CS.

First, nimrod, that's a Grad School ranking. Second, for an MS that is not very impressive at all.

Then you know some pretty lame people who must enjoy vacationing in the Poconos.

I manage both uva and gmu students. The gmu ones often make more because they started working or interning early while getting their degree

But George Mason --- now THERE'S a degree that carries a lot of wait in Indiana, the epicenter of the new economy.

Sorry had to do it.

Sorry I just can't believe any ranking that outs GMU ahead of Harvard, Princeton, Penn, Berkeley, COlumbIs, Cornell. Should I continue?

GMU is a commuter school that does provide a solid education, but it's not in same league as UVA or many other schools.

Typically, one would not attend an Ivy for CS. Cornell maybe. They are excellent for Humanities. CS is really more along the lines of engineering, which is not the Ivies strong suit.

Yep. Same experience here for my DH. UVA is about as well-known nationally as U. of Alabama, Tenn, or Georgia. No better or worse, just a state university. Listening to some alumni talk about it, you'd think it was on par with Harvard. Even my DH knows better.

But they are getting internships and jobs here on the exploding Tysons/Dulles corridor. Both of my children have paid summer internships through GMU with big name tech companies this summer.

Anonymous wrote:Computer Science is huge at GMU. http://cs.gmu.edu/. Serious Game Design as well. You have to be accepted into the programs, however, because they are in such demand. Game Design applicants must submit portfolios. The departments meet monthly with the Dulles corridor hi-tech companies to work with them to handle contracts (some students are paid to work on them) and to assess need. The average graduate in computer science makes more than the average UVA and William and Mary graduate (per President Cabrera). The internaitonal student body is immense, as are out-of-state students. Fourteen admissions counselors handle the international students alone. 35,000 students attend, 1/3 of which are Doct. or Masters' candidates. 12,750 live on campus and the construction there never ends. Please go visit and read up on what's in your own backyard. It's an astonishing institution that the state legislature has pumped millions into. Facilities are new and state-of-the art. The engineering schools are also well regarded. And Mason just opened its North Korean campus last year.

I hope you mean south korea

Yup. My bad. I just get irritated every time the ignorant come on and say it's a commuter school. So I have the facts memorized and just spit them out fast. It's a great opportunity for Virginia kids and surprisingly difficult to get into from the NoVA high schools.

Difficult compared to which schools? Isn't the acceptance rate like 65 per cent?

GMU. And the acceptance rate dropped significantly this year. I'll get the figures and post back tomorrow (have to go to bed now). The point is that the old 65 percent includes all of the State of VA, the Internationals, geographic diversity, the usual. The competition to get in from Langley and McLean high school is very competitive. GMU can give only so many slots to the many excellent students in the NoVA region so your scores and GPA and package must stand out. The students on my DS's hall first year included a RA from Hawaii, seventeen international students, two from Las Vegas, many Virginians from the southern most part of the state. He was one of the few Langley kids.

Last year GMU was rated no. 1 in Up-and-coming universities. Having a child there I can tell you the building is non-stop. Here are this year's Forbes, U.S. News & World Report mentions (100 Best Colleges for value in U.S.) and also job stats. http://admissions.gmu.edu/costs/

and here are the global stats: all 50 states and 135 countries. http://admissions.gmu.edu/common/visitMason.asp

I know a few Ivy math/CS dual majors. Their studies were more theoretical than practical, but they are all very sharp and are definitely creative thinkers. All very successful these days - tech entrepreneurs.
