Why is the McLean high pyramid over crowded with crappy buildings and teachers but pays high tax

Falls Church City has its own schools as a Class-2 city in Arlington County. Fairfax City could do so, but chooses to contract with FCPS for schools.

A class-2 city is not subject to County Taxes, but does share the district courts with the county. McLean taxes would stay in McLean. McLean could have its own school system, and control its own zoning, ad so on. It also could have its own Fire/Police services; FCC has a joint arrangement with Arlington County for Fire & Rescue, somthat is another option.

Falls Church does contract with APS for some services they don’t offer like the career and tech ed programs. It’s a good, long-standing relationship. An independent Mclean could do something similar, whilst funding its own capital projects and running its own schools.

have you seen this https://www.instagram.com/mclean.rot/

Ok, most of those pictures are showing damage and rot caused by mini acts of vandalism. I'm sorry, but until the kids take pride in the school and don't trash it, you've got no sympathy from me.

McLean kids should come on over and spend the school day at Chantilly HS. They think they have issues...

Both are long term disgraceful and disgusting issues. Frankly NO at large board members over the last 15 years should ever be re-elected again. Doesn't matter which Magisterial District you live in or what schools are assigned to your residence. You pay for this mess.

Don't you even think of mentioning our school on this forum. We're very happy without all the crazy people that live east of the parkway, and we're very happy Gatehouse doesn't give us attention, so we're able to maintain our independence from them and not let them ruin our school. If you're so unhappy here, then get out. we don't need or want people like you. I'm sure you'd be much happier at one of those schools Gatehouse loves to Champion, like Madison or even better, Oakton. And just be clear, McLean is in far worse shape than Chantilly.

McLean is in worse shape than even Justice HS. My kids attend McLean HS and they took SAT exams at Justice HS. At least the bathroom at Justice is ok to use while the same thing can't be said about McLean.

Agree!

The current school board is a total disaster, but especially the at large members.

Why crappy teachers in the title OP? I thought McLean teachers were solid. And are you saying living in an expensive area entitles you to better teachers? You can’t compare FCPS to places that have township based school systems. If that’s what you want, move or go private.

DP. We were very happy with the vast majority of the teachers at McLean. They - and the administrators - are excellent.

At this point you have to take everything said about the building conditions at McLean with a grain of salt. There are some aggrieved McLean parents who cannot abide by the conditions and treat it as a personal insult. There are also people at rival schools who use this as an opportunity to insult the school. And then there are people who would very much like to see the school get renovated and expanded, and are frustrated it hasn’t happened already, but still appreciate the many excellent things about MHS and would not trade it for a different school.

Among the various at-large candidates it’s Moon and McElveen who focus the most attention on improving facilities.

If other candidates want to follow suit and then call Moon and McElveen out for not having done more when they were previously on the Board, fine, but it’s not like Davis, Aucoin, Munar, Webb, or McDaniel has given any indication they know or care much about the current conditions at schools like Chantilly and McLean.

The troubling part though is the reason Falls Church created its own school district. I wouldn’t use FC as the reference model.

If the law against that is allowed to expire, I think Fairfax County will file for city status first and include all of the current county.

Just stop it. It’s a losing argument with the effect, and possibly the intent, to antagonize.

McLean hasn’t been asking for preferential treatment based on the tax bills of its residents. It’s been asking to be treated as well as other schools that are neither as old nor as crowded.
