If you look at any school, you will find famous grads. Doesn't mean much unless you can get a pattern.
Look at where some of the top leaders are sending their kids now if you must. Not all go to DC privates. The Gardners and former Gov/now Senator Mark Warner chose Burgundy Farm for their kids. |
I agree, which is actually why we send our DC to one of the schools listed in the thread title. The graduates are successful artists, entrepreneurs, scientists (lots of them), writers, volunteers, etc. A few may become famous, but nowhere near the proportion of well known parents. Almost all grow up to be interesting adults. |

I am not the OP, but I thought what they were trying to find out is whether there is a particular school that might be better in the arts or more prone to prepare students for the arts.
To the point above -- sadly (because we live in VA) -- they're really aren't the same number of elite privates in VA as DC or MD...I never could figure out why that is...maybe it's because the publics are rates as some of the tops in the country ... and TJ is the highest rated. |
....ah that's a nice little tie-in w/ Brearley and Beauvoir/NCS -- 'tis a small world isn't it? It does seem a lot of these east coast private schools have a lot of common bonds. |
| The saying ..."it's not what you know -- but who you know" is very apt when it comes to private school admittances. |

A parent is not doing their child any favors by using connections to get their child into a school that may not be a fit or may result in a disasterous placing.
I find the attention paid to prominent grads to be shallow and think the best energy parents can put to use is really discovering who their child is and what would be the best match in terms of schools. Stop thinking of the labels, people, prestige, etc. that don't matter one bit when it comes to your child. |
| oh please...we'll annoint you now for sainthood pp |
| People should just worry about their own kids and not criticize other people. It used to be a free country in the USA. |
| The person was right who said there weren't a lot of private school choices in VA for high school compared to the number in MD & DC |
|
Re private school choice - there really is a fairly equal number of schools in VA. The big difference is that MD and DC are connected while VA is across the bridges and more spread out. Many of the schools are further out. Don't forget, areas such as Tysons Corner are considered cities so private schools such as Flint Hill and Madiera (much older) are popping up further out in that area.
And, of course, you've got Fairfax County - huge and with what is considered one of the very best public school systems in the country - not to mention TJ. Apples and oranges.... |
Ali Wentworth attended but did not graduate from NCS. She moved on to a boarding school in Mass. I heard her talking about it on Oprah. |
| Really - who cares who went where? Is having a famous alum going to enhance your child's experience at that school? Shouldn't we be more focused on finding the right fit for our child instead of the potential for name dropping? |
She still went there and to the lower school - a lot of people in dc go to boarding school - you can still talk about what school they went to when in dc - |
I'm afraid the private school choices aren't as good in VA and none of the schools is ranked high in the rankings. And TJ is super -- but it's public not private. I realize it is the highest ranked p.s. in the US and that's obviously super! But if a kid isn't great in math and science -- there aren't many good choices for him/her in VA |
