| SP parent here. Thanks for those suggestions and ugh I see people worrying about the home values so much in the community Facebook group. I have to laugh with the PP who mocked the $600k chartwell split level home, it is absolutely true and a way to mask racism in this area. It has also driven me nuts this week seeing how little discourse there was on this incident compared to other menial topics. |
I’m PP who made the $600k Chartwell house comment. Don’t feel bad about living in SP or feel that you can’t send your kids to public schools there. I’m from Bethesda and graduated from Walt Whitman HS, and we weren’t all that much better tbh. There’s plenty of nice kids and families in SPHS. While I do believe there is a cultural issue in the area, it’s wrong to say everyone in SP is this way or that all the kids behave this way. The student newspaper condemned this incident far better than the school’s principal did, which says a lot. This is largely an adults failing to be adults problem. This incident doesn’t mean SPHS is full of bad or mean kids or that all SP families are racist. Work hard, be an informed citizen, and vote. Find like minded families, there’s plenty in SP and it is becoming more progressive. Hopefully one day, SP will be a place where people from all racial backgrounds will want to raise their families. |

It’s a horrific clip.
But why is old beardo guy pushing it on Tik Tok? |
PP here originally from Bethesda. Even though Shipley’s parents won’t let SP be redistricted from SPHS, I have seen many Severna Park proper parents support redistricting and say that it’s necessary to solve crowding at SP schools, which is something I’d never see Bethesda parents say in a million years. |

https://www.aacps.org/cms/lib/MD02215556/Centricity/Domain/158/Letter%20Severna%20Park%20HS%20airdropped%20video%201-10-23.pdf What?? Her first reaction is we must never condemn students? She leads with that. She leads with protecting the bully. Then she spends an entire paragraph threatening to find the students who exposed the video and tells parents to condemn this behavior (the bullying or the outing?). This is disturbingly unclear. She claims people notifying her of the video is evidence that the community doesn’t stand for this? No, no one at that table stood up for that kid. Except maybe the kid who taped it and airdropped it who she’s essentially threatening in this letter. Why didn’t she say: we have a serious problem here. This student was shockingly abused and it was done openly and in front of peers who did not attempt to stop it. It appears this behavior has become normalized in our school. We need to fix this now. Instead she said: nothing to see here, we have no major, problems and if any students embarrass us again you will be found and punished. I seriously wonder if the bully’s attorney contacted her to demand she prioritize protecting him. This letter is atrocious. Affluenza run amok. |
There was an incident where an SPHS student was accused of wearing Black face to school and got suspended from school because of it, and the girl’s parents sued the school. I wonder if the principal is being careful about the wording to avoid a potential lawsuit from the bully’s parents. |
The very fine Christians who love MAGA? |
Eh. Don’t be too impressed. They’re fine with redistrciting WITHIN the sphs cluster. Because it really doesn’t make a difference if your kid goes to Folger McKinsey or Benfield. But even the mention of redistrciting has the Shipleys parents in a tizzy telling everyone how there’s simply no way they can go to Old Mill with **those** people. |
SP Parent. Thanks for the positive and proactive actions I can take, I will look into and also try to help Dana S. get re-elected! Ugh, I have heard this anti-redistricting from SP/Shipley's. Why are the Shipley's parents so fanatical about no redistricting? The community seems very nice and would retain its home values or are they all secret MAGA folk? |
I think Shipley's is in fact one of the reddest parts of District 5. Severna Park proper is actually becoming more and more blue with time thankfully. |
It's abhorrent, but what specific crime was committed? They are definitely in violation of school rules, and they got rightly punished for it also. |
| Speaking of Bethesda and Whitman, it’s funny how Severna Park HS is essentially the Walt Whitman HS of Anne Arundel Co and how similar the two schools are, but the politics between the two areas couldn’t be anymore different. |
SPHS is an 8/10 on grear schools and OMHS is a 5/10. Let’s give the benefit of the doubt and say that the fact that sphs is 84% white has nothing to do with it (it does, of course…) but most families would rather be in a more highly ranked school cluster. People moved there “for the schools” so despite the fact that Shipleys is actually in Millersville and not SP, they feel like they “deserve” to be on sphs because that’s precisely why so many of them moved there to begin with. |
In fairness, they’re also just the loudest because it’s pretty obvious they’re the most likely to get redistrcited, just given geography. I’m quite certain “sp proper” parents would be just as loud if they thought there was any risk of their kids moving |
That’s Shipley’s problem and their own shortcoming! Everyone knows that redistricting of schools is ALWAYS possible. If being in the SPHS district is that important to them, why would they choose to live in a neighborhood that is NOT even in Severna Park and down the street from Old Mill? If being in SP is that important to them, they should have bought a house in SP proper in an area that is less likely to get redistricted out of SP schools. Shipley’s moved their way into SP schools in the first place at the expense of a community that’s actually in Severna Park. Also, GreatSchools ratings for AACPS high schools aren’t accurate because a GS error put in faulty AP data for ALL AACPS high schools (saying that <1% of students take AP classes), and that caused some schools to drop nearly two spots lower than it actually should. OMHS is supposed to be a 6/10. Arundel/South River/Broadneck were an 8/10, and SPHS is supposed to be a 9/10. |
