Exercises to get rid of your FUPA (fat upper pelvic area)

Anonymous
So I've lost some weight and gone down 2 dress sizes - yay! I'm about halfway to my goal. The weight I've lost around my core seems like it's been from my back (down bra band sizes as well) and sides, and not my gut. And I have a pretty good sized one.

What can I do to get rid of my FUPA? It's not enormous, and under clothes it's not really that visible - but it's very much there underneath the clothes.

My core is reasonably strong, but the fat in my gut doesn't seem to be budging. Is spot reduction really a myth? Any way to really work and target that particular area?

Good for you on your success so far!! Sadly, targeted weightloss doesn't really work. I'd spend a few bucks and revamp your wardrobe slightly to hide that area. Luckily, the more flowy longer tops are in. Get higher rise jeans. Not mom-jeans, but mid-rise.

haha, I know the acronym as something else for the P. Yours is more polite.

well if you are only half way to your goal, then you just need to lose more. My gut is always my last hold out. i'm 5'9" and to eliminate it, my weight has to be at 135 and below.

Spot reduction is a total myth. If you cut your calories and really reduce your fat percentage, it could work. But, my opinion is that women hold fat in that area for a reason, and it shouldn't be a huge concern at the end of the day.

Lipo is the only surefire way to get rid of it.

How many #s away is your goal? What size does that put you at?
Women often hold fat in their bellies post baby. It took me until I got to a size 4 to have a flat belly, plus a lot of ab work to have a good looking toned flat belly.

That is the only reason why I pushed from a 6 to a 4 was to get rid of that stupid thing-otherwise I would have been happy.

- do more cardio to burn the fat around your belly
- do lots of planks and plank variations, and make sure you are looking in a mirror so that you do them with the proper form
- examine your diet and be really honest. A diet high in processed food will make your belly very bloated and that could be contributing to your fupa. Eat clean for a few weeks and see how much your belly goes down

I'm about 20 lbs from my goal. Currently a 10 (down from a 14). I don't mind having a little pudge in my belly, but I still have an "overhang" (gross I know).

I don't eat a lot of processed foods - probably 80% of my food is made from whole, single ingredients at home.

Ok. I'm the one that asked and had to push to a 4. Be patient..you still have weight to lose. 20lbs ago I was 155 and a soild 8 with a belly like you describe. Ypu will be amazed at how amazing you will look at 20 less. Throw in weight training and you will be smoking hot.

I agree with this poster I'm down 3 sizes (12 to 6) and have seriously toned arms and legs, but my belly is the last hold out. I know that I had a flat belly at a size 4 and about 10lbs less before so that's my goal.

Good luck! You are doing great so far - keep it up!!

Just curious, are you following a diet or just watching wat you eat & exercise? I need to lose weight and am trying to figure out if I should do a formal diet??

I'm not doing a diet. I don't believe that diets are for the long term, or will keep weight off in the long term. Simple watching what you eat, eating good carbs, good fats, mostly healthy things. I don't count calories, honestly, but most of the food I eat is fairly "whole" and not very refined, if refined at all. And exercising most days of the week.

Losing weight and doing core work. If it is a bloated feeling, I would try eliminating legumes, wheat, and dairy for a few weeks and add them back in slowly one at a time. When I did that, I realized that legumes were causing a FUPA effect and I had no idea. Wheat caused a slighter one, and I have a friend who discovered similar issues from dairy. Luckily, I have none from dairy and I have reincorporated it fully in my diet.
