Two days ago, my husband noticed a strange man sitting on our neighbors stoop. From their stoop, you get a pretty clear shot of the back of our house and enclosed patio. My neighbor came out then and made it clear he had no idea who that guy was and asked him to leave. Yesterday, around 9ish, the doorbell rang. It was the same guy. He was asking if a "man with tattoos on his neck lived here". Um no. And the previous owner was a cleancut military type guy who had no tattoos. He also was looking behind my husband to see what he could see (spoiler alert- ikea furniture and crappy h&m clothes with some forever 21 costume jewelry and a giant pile of diapers and baby clothes). We hadnt yet taken out the trash, so maybe he thought we werent home? Also there was construction outside making a bit of noise, so maybe he thought no one would hear breaking glass? We have very little valuables honestly, but don't want to deal with a robbery. The house does look big and expensive, but trust me when I say that other than an (older model) iPad, hes wasting his time. Also should note we just moved in. I'm going to ask my neighbors about this guy, but am wondering what else I should do? Do I call the police and tell them I suspect that someone is casing the house? Will they care? I live in DC for what it's worth.
I'm afraid to leave my house today! |
| Call the police, report the incidents as "suspicious activity". There may not be much you can do now (you probably should have called last night right after the guy came to your door) but they might drive by during the day if you have a responsive police sergeant and they have officers free. |
| Also -- definitely talk to your neighbors about what happened asap and ask them to keep a look out for the guy or other suspicious activity. |
| You think? I'm I being paranoid? |
| I meant AM I being paranoid? |

Dude, why haven't you called the police? Agree that you should have called when he was at your house.
I think I read that most burglaries happen during the daytime... |
|
Agree with pp who said call the police. But honestly, I'd lie and say you saw someone peaking through your windows. At least then they will come by and if that guy is nearby casing your house, he will get scared off.
As a side note, this guy is seriously dumb if he's planning on robbing your house. You,your husband, and the neighbor will all be able to give a pretty good description of the guy |
| Lol. Instead of calling the police you post on a women's website. This country... |
You might be being paranoid, but I'm a SAHM with a baby. If i was in your situation, I'd rather be safe than sorry. |
| Why haven't you talked to the neighbor that found him on your porch? Maybe he knows of the guy? |
|
Call your local police precinct and let them know what has happened. They might be able to work in a drive-by or two. And if something does happen, they might be more responsive.
Our neighborhood precinct has sent out the phone numbers to the listserv. Our listserv also has some way to add suspicious activity to a database. The idea is that if others notice similar activity that more can be done sooner. And if someone knows more about the person in question (oh, that's Joe, he's harmless) they can pipe up. |

The guy might be casing the house for someone else. That as my thought. I'm the op btw.
I feel silly calling the cops. Do I just call 911 or the non emergency line? |

I live in DC - I have called DC police b/c my back door was open. They came and walked through my house. I was home alone w baby and laundry piles every where.
It was a windy day and we chalked it up to the wind. But they were great. I had gone w the baby and sat in the car until they came. Also - next time you think you see the guy. Take a picture w your phone. Even if it is from an upstairs bedroom. Also if you see a car that you think may be associated w him - take a picture - go for a walk and write down plates. If you do not know your neighbors - get to know them. |

Agree with the PPs.
Call the police. Non-emergency unless he is at your door. Then call 911. Have a good description of him and any vehicle he is driving. Take pictures if you can. Double check that all of your windows and doors are locked. He could be a bad guy. He could be a bails bondsmen. He could be one of the many agencies that work in the area and is trying to find someone. But don't take a chance. |

Call a home security company for a free in-home estimate. If he's "casing" your house, he'll see their van pull up and assume you're installing a security system.
And JUST CALL THE POLICE. Google "DC Police" and then call whatever number shows up. It's not hard, don't overthink it. |
