Someone is casing our house

OMG, is this not common sense? Do you really need to ask an anonymous message board if you should report suspicious activity to the police? WTF

So helpful. Thanks.

Not all of us want to report every lower class person hanging out in a rich neighborhood.

Yeah, because that's exactly what OP is doing

I have to agree with this.

Anonymous wrote:Two days ago, my husband noticed a strange man sitting on our neighbors stoop. From their stoop, you get a pretty clear shot of the back of our house and enclosed patio. My neighbor came out then and made it clear he had no idea who that guy was and asked him to leave. Yesterday, around 9ish, the doorbell rang. It was the same guy. He was asking if a "man with tattoos on his neck lived here". Um no. And the previous owner was a cleancut military type guy who had no tattoos. He also was looking behind my husband to see what he could see (spoiler alert- ikea furniture and crappy h&m clothes with some forever 21 costume jewelry and a giant pile of diapers and baby clothes). We hadnt yet taken out the trash, so maybe he thought we werent home? Also there was construction outside making a bit of noise, so maybe he thought no one would hear breaking glass? We have very little valuables honestly, but don't want to deal with a robbery. The house does look big and expensive, but trust me when I say that other than an (older model) iPad, hes wasting his time. Also should note we just moved in. I'm going to ask my neighbors about this guy, but am wondering what else I should do? Do I call the police and tell them I suspect that someone is casing the house? Will they care? I live in DC for what it's worth.

I'm afraid to leave my house today!

what neighborhood is this

Yes, report it to the non emergency police no and get an alarm system. But don't be afraid to leave your house.
Anonymous
get a photo of the guy.

You're welcome. I'm sure the lower class person and his friend with no name that has the tattoos on his neck will thank you too, when you least expect it.

Probably a process server or private investigator. But call the police.

One word: cameras. Many of them.

My friend has a creepy neighbor who is obsessed with their comings and goings, among other intricacies. They posted cameras and have caught the neighbors actually being worse than my friends ever imagined! Lets just say that neighbor is in extremely deep trouble.

Cameras are one of their many sources of proof. Without them, my friend would be the one who looked like the "crazy neighbor". In addition, the (real) crazy neighbor is preoccupied with appearances, so my friend having proof (in addition to the cameras), is priceless!

GL OP. It is no fun having a neighborhood crazy.

we reported a guy in the park across the street once - called the non emergency number and reported. He spoke to my 3yo DS, not me, and made me oh so nervous. Just a gut feeling. And really, the cops probably just told him he could not be loitering there, doubt they thought it was a big deal. I'm in FFX county and they were super nice to me about it.

Yes, do this, OP. Post a description of the man, too. And do call the police. You're not over-reacting at all. In fact, I think you might be under-reacting.

311 is non-emergency in DC. It's the Mayor's Citywide Call Center. After hours, you have no choice but to call 911 even if it's not an emergency because they don't staff 311 overnight.

I'd call. I watch a lot of true crime shows, and there was one such show where someone "used to" live in this house and the person looking for them broke in looking for them. I'm not going to tell you the whole thing because it didn't happen here and it doesn't sound like you live in a run of the mill neighborhood, but gentrification is tough, and you never know if this guy just got out of jail and is looking for someone who lived there years ago.

I've lived in DC a long time. You have to overreact to get the police to do a mediocre job, so don't forget that. I had someone force their way into my condo building and push me out of the way, called 911, no response. Par for the course with these idiot cops, so don't be afraid to amp it up a bit.

And this, THIS is how people get murdered, robbed, raped, etc.
