s/o Why the hate for Talbots, Chicos, etc?

Okay, so maybe you are young-ish now... But what will you wear after 50?
Psst, please do not become one of those old women wearing teen clothes. It's so uncool.

Talbots and Chico’s are very different. Talbots is preppy. Chico’s seems more earth mother with some cuckoo statement jewelry.

Just flood pants. Is that ok by you?

Huh? I buy Talbots in tall lengths with a 36" inseam. And they have a long hem. Unless you are 6'4" that should work.

Same here. I was a Talbots proponent on the other thread. And I only buy my work pants there because I’m 5’11” and their 36” works much better than most places 34”

I wear more casual wear and things like these chinos have a 28” inseam at the most

Am I missing something ? Offering some pants in my size and others not just makes me mad.

Those pants are meant to be cropped.

These chinos come in inseams of up to 33.5 inches.

This...Chico's appeals to art teachers, Talbot's to preppy types who volunteer for various organizing committees.

I'm 40. I have nothing against Talbot's, but Chico's is what my mom and MIL wear and: a) it's not my style and b) I don't want to dress like either of them. I also dislike their sizing system - I don't want to figure out if I wear a 1 or a 2.5 or whatever.

because its for old people

And perhaps for people who can punctuate. Anyhow, I'm 52 with a teen. Don't like either of these stores, especially, but I'm kind of at a loss for stores for my demo. We went to Ann Taylor Loft outlet last week, which I like, and my DD said it looks like "teacher clothes."

Yes--you are missing the fact that these are on sale and they have already sold out of other sizes in your choice. Sometimes, they will have a blouse I like for a great price--but it is only available in XS.

Their sales are terrific, though. Especially, if you can find what you like on final clearance.

I'm a lawyer and I still need to wear suits to court. Reasonable options are very hard to find. There just aren't that many stores offering classic looking suits in decent fabrics. Not everyone can wear shiny suits, or super slim cut pants, or the trendy cropped suit pant, or (heaven help me) the double breasted suit coat I'm supposed to believe is back in style. Also, not everyone can afford to spend $750-1000 per suit. So, that basically leaves Ann Taylor or Talbots for decent quality suits that won't make you stand out in a bad way. Does most of the clothing at Talbots make me cringe? Yes, but I don't need to buy it. I can get work clothes and that's great.

I’m 40 and my mom was always a size 12/14 and was a teacher. I think of Talbots, Chico’s, J Jill, and a lot of Eileen Fisher as “mom clothes” or “teacher clothes” which is a different aesthetic than I strive for in a business / office job.

I have several lawyer friends who swear that Talbots has some amazing diamonds to be found if you weed through. For me, it’s not about shunning, it’s that my time to shop and put together looks is so limited that I can’t bother with stores where I like 5-10% of their stock.

I can find an item I like and style it to work for me at almost any store. Sure everything from every store won’t work for me but if you insist you can’t make items work for you simply because they’re from X store you just have no style or creativity.

This!

PP, yes, you are missing something. Look at the fit of those pants. There’s no style to that, and no decent fit if you are in decent shape.

It’s still frump wear IMO. Those getting all up in their feelings about how they can find amazing things anywhere: I doubt it. The reason brands like J Brand or similar ever got play was because the fit and therefore the look is superior. Unless you’re a pretty gifted tailor or have one, dumpy trousers don’t look like pants designed to fit, not hide.

The Chicos sizing must have been developed as an ego balm. You’re not a size 14, you’re a 2.5! Now drape yourself in long necklaces like a saloon lampshade. Much style!

Or just different style from you. I imagine you in your skinny jeans, piece-y, beachy highlighted hair that you pay dearly for (and it’s just starting to look a little too dried out lately), looking down your snout at people. Neither the Chico’s style nor the Talbots one really speak me, but I can acknowledge that there’s room for more than one style on the planet. I can also acknowledge the ageism and classism that makes these two brands come in for so much scorn here.

I'm 49, here are my favorite black work pants:

https://neimanmarcus.scene7.com/is/image/NeimanMarcus/NMTB2QW_01_m?&wid=456&height=570

They are Milly. Fit beautifully. They look classic and expensive.

There you go. Talbots sells nothing that falls like these pants.

Amen!
I am not afraid to dress for my age. As I get older, I don't mind spending more for quality, comfort and style.

My phases of; finding myself, finding a man, having babies are over. It's ridiculous to dress like one. I do not need to advertise like a flower to a bee.

What does dressing one's age have to do with having babies and finding a man? I may be over 45, but I care about how I look as much as I did when I was 25. I'm also the mom of 16 and 19 year old boys. That doesn't mean I stopped caring.
