Best cupcakes

Hello Cupcake on Connecticut. They are delicious! My friend brought them over the other night. Not sure when it opened.

I've tried Georgetown Cupcake, Baked and Wired, Hello Cupcake, and Leslie's Fancy Cakes (Bethesda). Georgetown wins hand-down (with Baked and Wired second) BUT the last batch I got from Georgetown's Bethesda shop was not quite as great as usual. Several of the cakes were a bit underdone - frosting was still fabulous. I'm hoping it was just a combination of the holiday rush and working out the kinks of a new kitchen.
I'm not a fan of the super-sweet, over-loaded buttercream frosting on most cupcakes, which is part of why I love Georgetown - they also have ganache- or cream cheese-based frostings, and their buttercream has actual deep flavor (not just sugar). I also love that the cake part of their cupcakes is moist and tender and flavorful, not a dry tasteless afterthought like most cupcake shops'.

Now, if I'm feeling frugal, Cook's Illustrated has a quick vanilla cupcake recipe with chocolate ganache frosting that requires very little work and is reliably delicious.

I love Gtown cupcake. The best thing about it is that I am not at all tempted by other cupcakes now. The one exception is Baked and Wired, I used to work near there (before Gtown cupcake) and they are really really good. The shortcoming is that they are supersized. I think they were introducing a smaller version though. And as a PP noted the flavor selection is random and they used to run out all the time. They are denser than Gtown but still delicious. Have had Hello cupcakes. They are just okay. The gingerbread is pretty good.

I forget the name of the place in Penn Quarter next door to the yogurt shop near the Verizon Center, but I like theirs best.

I'm surprised that a few people have raved about Red Velvet near the Verizon Center. I thought they were just okay, but... I'm the Lavender Moon snob.

Never heard of this place - when did it open?

I saw it and was talking about it with somebody who said it had opened. Cannot confirm though.

Another vote for Best Buns. It's right up the street from CakeLove, but so much better!! We used to live there, and we were regulars. Delicious cupcakes, reasonably priced, and large!

I've only had one cupcake from Red Velvet but I was disappointed - I thought the frosting was really bland and dry.

I do like Whole Foods cupcakes - the mini ones are the ones I've tried, and they just taste like they are more "natural" and have fewer chemicals than other grocery store cupcakes.

Cake Love is incredibly disappointing, I think it is there icing maybe? I'll have to try Georgetown Cupcakes and Baked and Wired.

One of the local news channel's (maybe it was Channel 7 ABC ?) has a little clip yesterday about Curbside Cupcakes:

It looks like a pretty ingenious idea, given people seem to be going crazy over cupcakes these days. I have only tried Georgetown Cupcakes and thought it was just ok. Not at all worth the $$. (My relative gave me one - she is always raving about them and got a bunch for her birthday.) Personally, I think "homemade" cupcakes using a box of Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker mix is just as good.

Love Baked and Wired and they've expanded their offerings quite a bit recently - chocolate-peanut butter is awesome. But now I might have to go get one after lunch, since y'all got it in my head. You suck.

I like Wegman's cupcakes. The yellow cake part is like pound cake, very moist. And I love sugary frosting. Now I'm getting hungry, not good.

Wait - there is a Georgetown Cupcake roving truck!??! Where is this list you mention of where they go - I'm on their site and don't see any mention of it (ref to 22:29) but would love to know!

My hands down favorite (I am a HUGE cake fan) is relative new in town - Flutterby Cupcakes. They have a truck and will do birthday parties, showers, etc. And you can order cupcakes to be delivered.
