A Tiffany’s box from the person who pushed me out

Anonymous
I am a tech executive. Eight weeks ago I during my performance review I was given a “needs improvement”. It was a deeply unfair assessment but the bigger picture to kick me out made sense —my stock package is too big, they’re trying to get profitable, etc etc. All unfair corporate bullshit but v in line w the ethos of the company. My boss is also an objectively bad boss—she has three retaliation lawsuits against her currently.

Anyways once I saw what she was doing I cut right to the chase, asked for a buy out, our lawyers negotiated everything, and I have the summer paid.

So alls well that ends well I guess but for the last three years she has been brutal. Now, as the family breadwinner, I am unemployed. I have a lot of emotions, but one of them is unbridled fury at this point.

Anyways. 30min ago a Tiffany’s box the size of my cat showed up at the doorstep with a note from her about how I shine and she loves me and will miss me.

SHE fired ME. I told her I didn’t want to go. I asked her if thsi was actually about budgets and she insisted it was about performance. And now I am staring at a large blue box with a note about what a great team member I was.

What does this all mean??????? Wtf!!!!

She had to keep the line that it was about performance and not budget. You got the best possible deal. Now everyone has to pretend you chose to leave. The present is just to smooth any rough edges, which she correctly sensed you had. There’s not a better scenario. Just take the gift and move on.

I am dying to know what's in the box. Please open it and share with the group.

Fill box with cat poop and send it back to her.

I’d send the gift and note to her boss. Let them deal with her.

Agreed. Now tell us what was in the box.

Tear the note up into little pieces and throw it away. Regift the mugs or dumb vase or clock or whatever right away - why keep something that will remind you of her and her BS? If anyone in your industry asks you about her, be honest.

What is all of this “She fired me!! Whaaaa!!!!” stuff when you proposed the buyout?

Grow up and stop acting like a child. Might help you with the next job.

This is it. She can't be candid. I would return it to Tiffany's and use the credit towards something else, maybe for your spouse.

I don’t know why you’re upset, this is exactly the deal when working at a tech startup. Are you on a whim, they can hold overnight, yada yada. You should’ve negotiated equity we were hired, not options, but actual ownership. This is why many of us never go the startup route, only the founders and VCs are taken care of.
