Your hair looks gorgeous. It cost ... what?!

Did anyone else read this article in the Post about hairstylists now charging by the hour and/or a la carte for services (like a blow dry costs extra, etc.)? I have definitely seen a huge increase in prices. My long-time stylist owns her own studio and up until recently charged $85 and I paid her $100 in cash for a wash, cut, and blow dry. My hair takes at most 45 minutes, usually closer to 30. I went back this week and it turns out she now charges $125!! I just saw her in December and it was $85 and she didn't say anything about increasing her prices. I'm all for hair stylists making a living, but that's a HUGE increase without any notice. thoughts?

Thoughts are that is what it costs.

Pay her $125 and don't tip.

As a black woman, sometimes we get charged by the length or texture of our hair too. For me to get my hair done is often minimum $150. I have to keep changing stylists because I keep getting priced out. It sucks.

A link would be helpful.

I cut DD's and DH's hair at home. DD has knee-length hair. DH cuts my hair. DS in college goes to a cheap barber.

What I really need is a good conditioner!

Also, DC hair salons cost way too much for the quality of the cuts. I've been to Paris and other capital cities where it's much cheaper, and the cuts look great.

My thoughts are:

1. You weren't tipping her enough when you were paying her $100 for an $85 bill.

2. $125 is still pretty cheap around here (and by "here," I say that for the exurb I'm in, not even just D.C.).

Charging by the hour is very standard in other countries. It makes complete sense.

By the way these things are optional. So don’t act like it’s the same thing as the price of milk or gasoline going up.

NP -- I'm with you OP! I remember the days when I went to the then Elizabeth Arden salon in Tyson's Corner and paid $40 for a haircut ... now I guess $80+ is the standard but darn that just seems excessive

DP. $100 for $85 is close to 20%. What amount of tip would be acceptable?!

It's true but it's actually sad, because they don't make a good living.

Yeah, add $2 and it’s good. But if tipping the shampoo person as well, it’s really fine.

I pay something like $175 before tip for a haircut. It’s a “curly” cut, and it does seem like a lot, but otoh she’s very skilled. I don’t do color or Botox/filler so I figure the haircut is important.
