Someone commented on the November reading thread that a book described as "hilarious" was not hilarious, and few described that way actually are.
I could use a funny book to read. Any suggestions?? |
| Early David Sedaris books (on audio only to hear him read it) are pee your pants funny. |
| I will say that Bridget Jones made me laugh out loud continuously when it came out. But this was before they cast Zellweger and ruined everything. |
It’s so funny that you say this! I had the same reaction when I read it 20-plus years ago. I reread it this year at 45 and only found it disturbing and a little sad. She’s such a mess. |
Agree. The most laughing I’ve ever done with a book was early David Sedaris. Though listening to them as audiobooks is even better! |
| I find Carl Hiaasen's novels consistently hilarious. On the other hand, I find David Sedaris's writing not just unfunny but incredibly grating. But I you can get a good sense of whether you find writing funny within the first 5-10 pages, so browse until you find something you like. |

I think it depends a lot on your sense of humor. I don't often find things funny the same as the majority of people, but I can't pinpoint a difference. Often something called funny will be enough to cause a grin or a chuckle, but not actual laughing. Maybe I am humorless.
I do think David Sedaris can be laugh out funny. I recently read a silly romance by Christina Lauren that made me laugh - The Unhoneymooners. I don't know why but it just worked for me. |
This is OP and I've never heard of The Unhoneymooners but it sounds like a fun read in these hard times! Big fan of Sedaris from way back - and loved Bridget Jones back in the day, too. It's interesting that you find it sad now, instead of funny, PP - this is what aging does to us, doesn't it! I was just thinking the other day how now I find all the "terrible" parents on beloved TV shows to be mostly in the right - Emily Gilmore and Henry Spencer, specifically. |
| Shit, Actually by Lindy West. The audiobook cracked me up. Must love snark. |
|
Nora Ephron’s books always made me laugh out loud.
Depending on your age you may find ‘What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding‘ amusing. |
| Agree with David Sedaris. Brad Meltzer's first two books had funny moments. I laughed out loud startling the dog reading Chelsea Handler's books, and I'm not really a huge fan of hers. Dave Barry wrote a couple fiction books that were really funny. |

If you want stories that use humor vs. books in the humor genre...
In fantasy: T. Kingfisher (she writes horror, too, but her fantasies use humor) Olivia Atwater Heather Fawcett Margaret Owen In Romance: Tessa Dare Jennifer Ashley Ali Hazelwood In Mystery: Kerry Greenwood Ashley Gardner (aka Jennifer Ashley) Lynn Messina Julia Seales (just one book out) |
Thanks for all these recs! |
| There is one really hilarious part in Born a Crime |
I've enjoyed all of Jonathan Tropper's books. Some are funnier than others, but they were all funny. |
