I would not drive from Glendale to downtown LA during rush hour. Are you posters familiar with LA?

Why not? I don't know LA, but the map says it's only 8 miles.

Yes, you clearly don't know LA. It can easily take 45 minutes to go from Santa Monica to Westwood (so halfway to downtown) and that distance is only 5 miles.

So just trying to sort things out. Is it your belief that there's no 3-4 BR homes in neighborhoods with good schools within an hour of central downtown LA?

There are many but not in Op's price range. takes a million to get a 2 bedroom cottage in the nice close in neighborhoods. That doesn't necessarily get good schools, just safety and a decent commute. we loved la but the housing costs brought us back east.

The houses on House Hunters LA under $1M are small and shabby.

What's not accurate about them? I'm simply reporting the best route time reported at that time.

For comparison, google maps tells me my DC to VA commute takes about 41 minutes, when in fact it takes 55-60.

We're suppose to take your biased recollection of commute time over software that is accounting for real time distance, speed limits, road conditions, and traffic conditions? Sorry, but I'll put my trust in data over a single persons opinion.

Um, not really a biased recollection. It's my commute that I currently do every day and know exactly when I leave work and pick up my kids. I agree one person's experience is not data, but I'm not fudging my numbers.

Give us your approximate route, something close but not exactly to your home/work. And do your times also include the time it takes to pick up your kids?

Ladies, please stop derailing the thread. OP knows it's an estimate.

And add one accident and you add an hour

OP, you may want to post your budget and ideal commute on this forum, http://www.city-data.com/forum/los-angeles/, and get info directly from the locals.
