Any one else's scalp itch after coloring hair?

I use Clairol Complements, which I buy at Sally Beauty. You mix the tube of color with the developer that you buy in a separate bottle. It's semi-permanent and lasts a long time. No itching problems. The few times I let the salon use their own dye, I got a terrible rash. I think it was from Redken permanent dye.

Thank you all SO MUCH-- I brought Sweet & Low (4 packets) to stylist today. SO FAR SO GOOD, but I will not be out of the woods for another day or so, based on past. She used a different product (with the S & L) and told me to let her know if I get the itch ---that she will give me a treatment (rinse)---I don't remember name, begins with an "H" -- I think. My point---ask stylist for remedy. I suspect salons might use a cheaper product unless a complaint about itch (UGH!). If no itch (please!!), I will always use S&L--who cares whether that or the new product was responsible for itch -free procedure.

I coloured my hair with Salon professional supplies pro colour, and I had the same reaction. around 4 hours after colouring, my head started to itch like crazy. I could stop scratching my head, and developed sores on my scalp. I went to the chemist, and they suggested a antihistamine witch eased the urge to scratch. day 5, still scratching.
I want to be able to colour my hair still, but am aftraid of going through this torture again. Someone has suggested natural colour dying. Has anyone heard of this?

Been coloring my hair for decades - sometimes at home, mostly at salons - with no problem. Had it done today at my regular salon. 12 hours later and I'm itching and can feel bumps on my scalp. Even have some red bumps at one temple, like where it sometimes gets on your facial skin a bit and they wipe it off. She used the same products as always. Wonder why the sudden reaction.

Hormones can cause different reactions. For some, it's best to avoid coloring during your period. I have colorist put sweet n low in the mix and they do an extra wash (2-3 shampoos) to make sure all dye is gone. This has drastically reduced the itching and flaking I used to get.

I am looking for some relief after I just had this happen to me after coloring my hair yesterday. I have never had this happen in all of my time coloring my hair. just read that if you take 1-2 packets of sweet n low sugar in your hair dye when you mix it that it calms the reaction your scalp will have to the dye. I will post the link here to what I read. I am definitely going to try this next go round. The article was posted April 15, 2014... after this thread started. But hopefully new people coming to the thread will see it and maybe stop the breakouts from dying hair ahead of time.

Mine only ever itches if the dye had not been completely washed out.

If I dye at home I always make sure to rinse for a long time, shampoo a lot, condition AND use the in-packet condition rinse so it doesn't leave any residue that causes itching.

I developed an allergy to permanent hair color, it started with itching and ended up with a weeping scalp and sores (over the course a few colorings). Now I use Sanotint Reflex (have to order it online). So far this is the only I can color my hair with and not have a reaction.

secret to avoid that go with super dirty hair that has ntural oils so it wont burn, hair color itself is bad for the scalp and hair, but we love it, so next time go with dirty hair

Ok...I too suffer from itchy scalp after coloring. I found that adding a few packets of Sweet & Low sugar into your mix. It appears that we are highly sensitive to the ammonia and it burns our scalp. The ingredients in this balance out the ph level. I colored and researched this...will repost if this indeed works!

Anonymous wrote:I colored my hair 2 days ago with Clairol Balsam Color 612 RB. Yesterday I woke up with extreme itching and a rash along my entire hairline. My eyes and face were also beginning to swell. By yesterday afternoon I had painful bumps all over my head. Some were swollen lumps and some were sores. I also had a severe headache. Then my neck began to hurt and I could hardly turn my head. Yesterday evening I went to Walgreens to see what I could do for some relief. First it was recommended that I take Benadryl so I got the Walgreens generic brand. Next I was told to wash my hair with T-Gel shampoo. I also purchased this in the Walgreens generic brand. Then it was suggested that I get some Scalpicin liquid and apply it to my scalp after towel drying. Again, I got the Walgreens brand. And lastly I was told to take ibuprofen. When I got home I immediately began this series of instructions. It stopped the itching and the pain and I was able to get some sleep. I am now going on day three and I still have all the same symptoms. I woke up this morning really itchy and burning and in pain and swollen. I had to repeat the whole process and now I feel ok again. I have colored my hair many many times and I have never had this happen before. It is a nightmare. Without the above products, I would go insane. For those of you that are experiencing this too, maybe this will help. On a side note, I will not be coloring my hair again for a LONG time if ever. I would rather be gray than this.

yuck

That sounds dreadful.

I haven't colored my hair in over 11 years, and I love my gray!

Perhaps the itch is from the new mutant lice.
