I have been coloring my hair for over a decade now, you name it and I have done it to my hair with no issues at all.
Ever since I was pregnant with #1 a few years ago - I used a vegetable based dye at the salon and dont remember having any issues with it. Fast forward to after baby #2 and returning to the regular hair dyes at the salon - I have been having issues with my scalp about 12 hours after I color it until I wash it again. I understand that dermatitis may occur from an allergy to phenylenediamine but I think colors that dont have it might have other harsh chemicals such as lead and mercury. questions: Any one else have issues with hair color and adverse reactions If yes, Have you found something safer to color the roots (gray in my case ) |
my scalp gets scaly after my color & highlights.
Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo, conditioner and scalp treatment seem to soothe it and get it healthy. Healthy enough that after the most recent color & highlights, I didn't have any reaction. Also, don't wash your hair the day before you color. Let your natural oils protect your scalp. HTH |
I go through the same thing. My hairdresser added sugar to the dye...she said it would prevent itch. Can't say it helped.

Yes, mine itches, and I color it myself. It usually goes away after a day or so. It used to itch a lot more when I had it colored in a salon. I'm pretty sure the chemicals are not good for me. But, since I have otherwise healthy habits, I'll let this be my one vice! |
i have also been getting my hair done for years. Just the last 2 times i have had problems.
she said that she has not changed the stuff she user. This last time she used a less harsh hair color, the problem is still there, itchy after about 5-6 hours. Cant stand it, took Benedril , it is getting better. I have changed medications also the last couple of times and might think it is interacting with my system. |
me too- but i guess it depends on the brand- at my former place- i itched like crazy- so much that it caused me psoriasis or eczema on a part.. now- it doesn't- i moved |
Mine only itched when I did it at home, and then only when I went to bed that night. It was like the pressure of my head against the pillow aggravated the scalp, because it was only the part that I was lying on that itched. |
Benadryl the night after I get it done - have a great night sleep and NO itching.
It went away for me after a few times. |
I've heard from two people that adding a packet of the artificial sweetner in the pink packet (not Splenda, can't remember the name) to the hair dye will stop the itching. |
yes it has happened to me it depends in the brand i go to a salon where they use wella i think koleston and it burns, but loreal doesnt, also go with your hair dirty it helps, also at pr and partners to speed up they put you under a dryer ask for the vaporizer because the dryer makes it itch more |
Amen, it started itching last year. Now it doesn't take color, what little it takes washes out right away! I've been coloring for over 15 years! Wonder what I can do short of purchasing a wig. Perhaps Henna from another country. |
I had been going through this for about a year and finally couldn't take it anymore. My salon only offered the one hair color brand (gold something or other) so I changed salons as an experiment. New salon, new color brand, end of itching. Hallelujah!
It was a bit awkward letting my old salon know... |
If you wash your hair before with clarifying or dandruff shampoo that makes it itch. Also scrubbing to hard before or shampooing twice. Thus, go with Hair a little dirty as pp suggested. |
I have been getting my hair colouring done for years now with no problems, but recently my scalp gets itchy and dry a couple of hours after applying hair colouring (about 5-6 hours). My hair colour is medium brown. I did not have this problem before only started this year about 8 months ago. I have went to different hair salons and try it at home and got the same results....very itchy and dry scalp. I have not used hair colouring since and going grey very quickly which I don't like. Has anyone experience this problem with hair colouring, if so please help. |
I don't wash my hair 2 days before the color, otherwise there's not enough oil and I itch. |
