alopecia areata - did your hair ever grow back?

Anonymous
Hi, I'm a 15 year old girl, I've had alopecia for about 2 years now. It started when I was 13, I started losing my hair and I didn't know what it was. I went to the dermatologist, and they gave me these pills and like 3 different types of cream but nothing worked. After about a year & a half, I had a full head of hair. It wasn't long hair, it was short, a very short bob haircut like how they had it in the 20s. But, then it started falling out again, and that's where I am today, I find it really hard to deal with it, (again!!!!) and it just worries me and stresses me out even more. Especially my school, I hate my school it's one of the worst schools and has a bad rep. People are so rude and fake. I'm afraid. I wear a hat because you can see the patches, but also because I'm unconscious about what people think about me. The way they look at me etc. I can't handle all of the pressure. I think what I lack is confidence within myself...

Hi,
My brother had Alopecia when he was 8 years old, my aunt had also recently got a patch to, then she visited so many doctors and did a few things here and there. Then decide to go healthy, really healthy, she only ate salads which sometimes had seafood or a healthy meat, Went on daily jogs 2 times a day.She also visited a specialist and found that Alopecia only last up to 14 months when maintained.Meaning he had to go healthy and doing fitness until patch was fully grown back and about 4 months extra to maintain, with the dietary requirements she found other ways on keeping it maintained by the internet. By 14 months her hair was fully grown back, after she told her story we decided we would get my brother do the same.We have seen major improvement but slowly because slow and steady wins the race. Also stress helps to raise amount of patches on head, so enjoy your time rather then always stressing.

I've had alopecia ever since I was in the fifth grade. On and off for a long time... Right now I have gorgeous curly hair. Down my back almost. It's a very trying disease. It not o my affects you physically but it affects you emotionally and it gives you so many insecurites, as a teenager you feel like your years of being young and innocent are taken away from you because you're so busy hiding. And you become so paranoid because you think people see what you're going through, but in reality it's just the devil. I'm almost completely don't with alopecia now, I put my medicine on regularly and I pray. I constantly pray. Even when I'm done with the hair loss, I'm still going to buy medecine just as a precaution! But.. God is good. He is SO good. Whatever you do, although this is a trying time for anyone going through this. Trust God. Some trials we don't understand, but they're not meant for us to understand, we just have to trust him. No matter what it looks like.. Trust him. Pray constantly and God will restore into you all that you need and deserve. Cast your cares upon him because he cares. He will heal you fully! Believe and recieve that because if you make God your priority and you live according to the way he would want you to live, he will give you the desires of your heart. God speed.

Hi Kate - I know how you feel. I've been battling it for 23 years - started when I as 14. At 20 I lost it all - head to toe and it was devastating. I was dating an amazing guy who didn't care and a family that supported me. I hope you have a great group around you. My dermatologist was SHOCKED beyond shocked when my hair grew back after total loss. Said that was very usual. I've had every blood test done under the sun and have tried every treatment. Naturopaths, washing my hair in cayenne, etc. I just don't want you to lose hope. I keep trying and trying. I have lost my head hair 3 times now and I've currently had it for 6 years (thinning on and off a lot). Recently I was looking for wigs again because I knew it was going again...but decided not to give up yet. I tried a new dermatologist and she has me trying new things. Rogaine (I fought this for years because I figured it wouldn't help NEW hair grown, but it does), biotin, Vit D (I live in Seattle and it's a huge factor for alopecia here), Allegra, and she want to put me on a blood pressure medicine that also tested in a study to help hair regrowth. I believe it's called spironolactone. I just don't want you giving up or losing hope. I know it's hard to stay positive, I've been there for years, but know you do have a community of people who have alopecia that support you!

Mine started in June last year and I ended up shaving my head just before Christmas. The patches have started growing back and is hardly noticeable now apart from one small patch at the back of my head. Hopefully will be able to start growing my hair back soon. Also lost most of facial hair and I've noticed that growing back albeit white which I'm told will return to natural colour in time. Still don't know what caused it. Not particularly stressed and my immune system is the same as its been for the last eight years. Here's hoping !!!

For all alopecia sufferers please buy PILL FOOD. Order from AMAZON or other companies online. Its about £20 for 100 pills. I have used it for 3 yrs and see a huge improvement in my ALOPECIA AREATA. Start with 3/4 tablets daily. Once hair better dont think of stopping. I did then my hair got bad again so now I will stay on a maintenance dose of 2 tablets a day for years to come. Eat plenty of fruit and veg take a multi vitamin and take a Zinc tablet. You wont see results for few month so do not give up, keep taking PILL FOOD. Google it and you will hear great reviews. Please spread this and dont let anyone suffer this condition.

Who wants to take 3-4 tablets per day for a lifetime?

Same.

To other sufferers, what has been your experience with it traveling to other parts of the body? Right now it is just her eyebrows and eyelashes.

I am 21. I found a small bald patch the size of a coin in June 2016. Since then 5 more appeared and each day they increasingly have gotten bigger and have started linking to each other. I wake up and have hair over my pillows. Clumps of hair falls out when I wash it. I have been given shampoo and have had two lots of injections from my dermatologist. It is now December and I have no improvements only the opposite. I have been successful so far in covering theses patches but recently this has become more challenging and I am starting to look into other options.
It is extremely upsetting at times but at the end of the day I am thankful that apart from hair loss my body is healthy and I try evertime that I feel upset to believe that this will get better.
I've found reading all your comments very helpful as I had never heard of Alopeica before I had it.
Wishing you all the best

I had one patch of hair the size of a quarter fall out. I think it was because I was put on Metformin for (very mild) PCOS in conjunction with planning a pregnancy. The dermatologist I saw was very dismissive of the idea of a connection, but I would be very curious to know whether anyone else has lost hair after starting Metformin

I stopped taking Metformin and haven't had a recurrence since (almost 9 years), knock-on-wood, but of course had already imagined losing all my hair....

Do you have any topical or oral medication? I found the topical medication was very helpful for temporarily stopping the itching.
