I had this starting about six months after my first child was born. Cortizone shots in my scalp from the dermatologist and getting my thyroid under control with methimazole - I was hyperthyroid - took care of it.

Leave stress out of your life and keep pushing. Stress attacks the body in many ways

I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata a year ago. I had two spots at the top of my head. One was the size of a quarter and the other was the size of a dime. I received cortisone shots once and they never came back. About 5 months later I had a larger spot at the nape of my neck that spread across my neck like wildfire. I went to a different dermatologist that gave me shots just under the skin every month. The hair came back. I see him every month to check on it, but I have not needed the shots again. Prior to my monthly visits, I put lidocaine on the area and I never even felt the shots. I have absolutely no hair on my neck at all, but the hair on my head is almost 100% back to normal.

Can you share the name of your dermatologist that was helpful? Thanks!

I've been to two different dermatologists for cicatricial alopecia (not alopecia areata). Dr. Callender is the most highly recommended dermatologist for hair loss.

i noticed a quarter size right in the crown of my head. i waited for about 4 months to see if it would grow back. Needless to say, it didnt grow back...it just got bigger (about 6 fingers wide) finally i went to the doctor, got some blood work done (to check my thyroid etc...) it came back negative so the dr sent me to a dermatologist. I started getting steroid shots in the affected area along with the shots, my dermatologist also had me taking biotin and Allegra (he says he advises all his alopecia patients to use this, and that it shows results) withing a month my hair started growing back. i was scheduled to go once a month for 6 months to get the shots. Since i had good regrowth the derm stopped me at 4 months. He said he didnt want to do the shots anymore since my hair was growing back quicker than normal and he said too many injections could start to make my scalp lumpy or appeared caved in from too much steroid. Im hoping since i reacted so well to the shots that my hair will keep growing back and not fal out again!!! btw my hair is right below my dimples in my lower back (VERY LONG) i was DEVASTATED to say the least when this happened. Ive been thinking of cutting it to below my shoulders to keep the weight off my scalp.

Hi. I had a small bald patch in the back of my scalp for about a year, and then the hair just grew back. That was 3 years ago and--knock on wood-- it hasn't returned.

Im a 14 year old girl, everyone thinks this has started because of stress but no one knows, i noticed i had lots of bald patches about may last year, as time went on they went away. I noticed i still had one at the back of my head, it started getting bigger so i went to the doctor and he took my blood to see if it was my thiroid and it wasnt, it was gettin worse i had paths coming from the bald patch and we went back to the doctor about a week later and got liquid to put on the bald bits, lots of my hair was still coming out it was gettin really bad so we went to this place and got a wig, i now wear a wig but i still have really thin strands of hair, it does get itchy and i have like red spots all over my head, is this signs of it growing back or something?? Its been such a horrible start to the year can i please get help or something

I'm sorry your having such a hard time. Having bald patches is very hard, psychologically, and can also be quite painful. A good dermatologist can give you a diagnosis and treatment plan. Many types of alopecia are temporary, and the hair will grow back. Some types are permanent. Good luck at your appointment in March.

I have the red bumps on my head too. I have noticed that this is eventually where the hair grows out of. For a year I had no hair growth at all, no red bumps or anything, my head was shiny. I get the itchy head too, it must be a sign of hair regrowth as I don't think what is there is falling out.
