Tufts vs. Emory for undergrad if child wants to be lawyer

Anonymous
So much of this is geography. I don’t know why the Tufts hater is so vehement, but for most kids looking at these schools (and others) geography plays a huge role. My kid never would’ve applied to Emory, but I have no reason to try to bash the school. There are a lot of good schools out there.

They are not the.same academically nor do they have equal prestige. Emory has a much higher reputation, 4.2, vs Tufts 3.7

What does 4.2 and 3.7 mean?

I see them as equal in prestige and I would pick Tufts personally.

There reputation scores on US News. Academics don't see them equally

These are almost entirely influenced by the how well or badly the ranked college does in creating positive personal interactions with the ranking colleges dean/provost who fills out the insipid USNWR reports. It’s not an objecting measure of a college’s actual academic quality. What does that even mean? Teaching strength? Research strength? Access to resources? Student cohort? Even if you can measure these things, every person rating will weigh these differently. Not to mention the halo effect that may artificially and unjustly inflate some college’s reputation. College rankings are so ridiculous.

Over 30,000 people respond to the survey. How could one college president make that many connections in the industry? A score of 4.2 means 20% of respondants give Emory a perfect score. As opposed to a bunch of respondants giving Tufts a 3/5.

There is one Emory parent that is fixated with Emory’s U.S. News ranking. I fear for their happiness should Emory fall a spot or two in the rankings. But otherwise, best to just ignore her.

Tufts being better just because it's in the northeast is worse than saying Emory is better because of the rankings. Rankings aren't perfect but the first scenario seems biased.

Can you prove academically that Tufts is a peer to Emory? Do you have any evidence other than your opinion?

I kinda agree with Emory mom. Rankings aren't everything but it's hard to justify 90k a year for a school that continues to decline in the rankings...It unfortunate but the school isn't what it used to be.

Op it should come.dowm to cost, if Tufts is cheaper go there. If it's Emory, then Emory. I do think Empry is the better school, but probably isn't worth a premium.

The question was about prospects for law school. I refuse to believe that law school prospects are different solely based on any differences between these two schools. I went to an Ivy League undergrad and attended a great law school with smart students from a wide variety of schools.

I see them as equal in prestige and I would pick Tufts personally.

"Their" academic. Emory Mom and her absolute reliance on US News and their new rankings for her feelings of prestige and self worth.

I think these schools are similar in terms of prestige but, fwiw, Emory has an edge in STEM and Tufts has an edge in social sciences. So, if your kid is going to major in history or poli sci, Tufts is probably better. If biology or another natural science, Emory.

The rest of you are relying on opinions. Emory being higher ranked on multiple rankings including US news is a fact.

The rankings are opinions, friend.

It’s not the protests at Emory that would make me pause but the way the administration called police onto the campus

It was the right thing to do. They were out of control, and there are many Jewish students at Emory. Most students there are trying to go to class, and Emory is a medical center with many people trying to access their doctors.

Doctors don't practice on the lawn.

I don't have any dog in his fight, but Niche is basically Yelp and relying on it makes you look not so smart.
