I don't care what time of day the party is... Order pizza cheapskate.

It's not a question of being able to afford it or not. Who can't afford a few pizzas? It's about saying, "ENOUGH! It's all too much!" An afternoon party from 2:30-4:00 (or, as some other PP said, anytime between 1-5) does NOT call for more food and I am not going to give in to the constant pressure for more, more, and more in this society. I am not doing it.

If you truly felt this way, you wouldn't be having a party in the first place. You are using sanctimony as a cover for being cheap and thoughtless.

I totally agree. The pp is just a poor host. You don't have to do pizza but stop being cheap and serve food.

As I said to the other PP, "We'll just have to agree to disagree. You will get an invitation and then you can decide whether or not you'd like to come to our crappy parties. If not, no harm, no foul, but that's just how we do our parties. We'll miss you, but will still have fun! Bye! "

OP here. I think 2-4 is the only time frame you can get away with only serving cake. 1:30-4:30 is probably safe. My opinion is that if you bump into 12 or bump into 5, you should serve a meal or appetizers that are close to a meal. JMO.

Seriously, how fat are you people? Are you the same moms that carry snacks and drinks everywhere you go? An afternoon party certainly does not require that the hosts provide a meal.

I know! I truly cannot BELIEVE how many people feel so strongly about this?!?!?!?!?? It is just the oddest issue to me!!! It is like you are taking their binky away from them, or something, if they cannot have access to food or drinks for 1.5-2 hours. They are PANICKING!!

With your caps and exclamation points that you seem way more worked up about this than PPs.

Then offer up less and don't pretend to host a party. A party includes food, unless it's a frat party then it only includes drinks. If you're opposed to hosting a party and making your guests comfortable then don't say you throwing a party.

You are so incredibly high maintenance and entitled. Seriously. Give it a rest.

++++++++!!

Every time I log-on to DCUM, this thread has several more pages. Having a party during a normal mealtime? Serve food. Having a party between meals? Serve cake and drinks.

I wouldn't be using this time to make a stance. You know, the time when people have taken time out of their day to attend. When they have likely brought a gift.
But you go ahead, just know I will think you are a cheap bastard.

What's wrong with having ample food in hand?
Control issues much?

When we get invited to a party, we are just happy to be invited. If you don't want to be invited, just let us know and we won't invite you next time. No skin off our backs!

Yes, relax. Go buy yourself a piece of pizza, if you want one so badly.

Another poster in agreement, here. Unless the party is during lunch or dinner time, why would anyone need to provide food besides a freakin' cake? Kids and adults don't need to eat every 1.5-2 hours, unless they have a medical issue. Even when we we've attended lunch hour parties, the kids hardly touch the food. All they want to do is get up and play.

Yeah, the kids always eat two bites of the pizza, three bites of the cake (frosting only), and then get bored and move on.

I only have a DD and no sons, so maybe this is just with girl parties, but, really, there's so much food left over anyway, it's just criminal.

We hosted a party at My Gym. Those kids could barely sit still for the cake. They only had an hour and a half of playtime. All they wanted to do was run wild.

Huh? I don't think many posters have argued that you need a full meal at 2:30 in the afternoon. But if your party ends at 12:30 or 6, you should provide something. And not just for the kids, unless it's strictly drop off. I think people are annoyed because they're being invited to parties that end at 1:00 and no food or drinks are offered to the adults. A cupcake party at 2:30 is totally fine. A cake-only party that ends at 12:30, or where each kid gets a slice of pizza and parents get nothing, is rude.

How about this - if you do not plan to serve food, make sure that your party does not interrupt other people's mealtimes. This madness doesn't stop with kids' birthday parties...i was invited to a party from 7:00 to 9:00 recently. No dinner, and clearly not enough food out that everyone was expected to make dinner out of that; tiny appetizer plates. After being told to make sure we were hungry!

Ti. It was ridiculous. These people were massively wealthy and had hired staff on hand for this small (25 people) party so I don't know what they were thinking. Party was out in the 'burbs, too, and not many places were open for dinner after that. So you get home at 10:00, hungry.

Ummm.... I have a baby, so this is all new to me. But am I to gather from these posts that I will be forced to attend birthday parties with 20+ toddlers and it will be considered "normal" for no one to offer the adults wine or beer? Yikes.

we had beer & wine, (+food) at our DS's 1st and 2nd bday parties. We'd have it at his 3rd, too, but it's not in our home.
