OMG! MY husband thinks I am nuts b/c I keep telling him that our very very old wooden front door smells like a cat peed all over it!!!!! You just made my day. WTF is causing that smell?

The neighbors cat!!!

I am the PP with the stinky door...I just saw this very very old thread pop up again, too funny. We have no cat and there aren't any cats around - plus the stinky door in question is behind a glass storm door. It only smells when you open the door - leading me the believe the stank is contained within the edge of the door, right? It seriously smells like ass. Help needed.

Ironic though you are infinitely more happy the problem is a leak. Its a lot cheaper to catch a baby snake than resolve all the issues resulting from the leak.

If I found a snake in my basement, I'd have to move. Or maybe I'd just never, ever, ever, ever go in my basement again.

Am I the only one who thought...really...your house smells like the newborn Katniss?

(sorry, the victim of reading too many odd combinations of threads from "Recent Topics")

Im the p who mentioned rat snake back in 2012. We live in mclean so its not quite great Falls type country but we do see a fair amount of animals.
Rabbits, Deer, chipmunks, raccoons, Fox, mice, snakes.

If owners before you had cats, with all this rain, if the basement gets damp for some reason, the smell will come out.

I'd worry more about the source of the leak than the cost of the carpet repair.

We have this problem, too. I actually sanded, primed with stain blocker, and painted the door, which helped, but when you open it after it's been closed a while (door to our screened porch is original to the house but isn't opened often), it smells terrible again. It's completely covered and above ground, so I have no idea what it is. Yuck. The storm door I think seals in the smell, so maybe if we lost the storm door it wouldn't be so bad.

We have developed a cat pee smell over the past month or so, and I can't locate the source. Sometimes it seems stronger if we open windows near the front of the house but when I go out there, I don't smell it. Any tips for locating the source? We can't even consistently decide if it is stronger upstairs or downstairs. TIA.

Great reasons to never have a cat. or a dog either. pi$$ and $hit.

We have a cat. He has tenure, but when he's gone I'm not going to refill the billet.

When you adopt a cat, the cat nazis insist EVERYONE in the house visit and approve the animal. So anyone (me) gets to veto. DW and 3 daughters will need to negotiate if they want another.

We were dealing with an occasional foul smell also. I thought we had a sewage leak somewhere. The problem was there was no consistent timing to the smell.

A few days ago I found a garter snake on my patio; I caught it and relocated it several miles away. Lo and behold, I haven't caught a single whiff of that foul smell since the relocation of the snake. I now believe the snake had made a home in our dryer vent, which is very close to where we thought we had a sewage leak.

What do camel crickets smell like? I use the traps but I leave them b/c I heard they are cannibalistic so I figured the dead ones are bait. My basement has several odors. What do the crickets smell like? Gross!

I read to be careful cleaning with ammonia if there are cats in the neighborhood because they are attracted to the smell, since it mimics cat piss/musk. Just FYI.

Rat snakes eat mice - Rat snakes are good snakes.

I live in springfield and once found a corn snake in my basement. (baby snake, thought it was a kids toy, then it moved and I screamed). I'd rather have the snake than the mold.
