I am astounded at the wide variety of things I have learned smell like cat pee. Very informative! I will now worry about all of them (well, not the boxwood).

Me too. I wandered on here trying to figure out why my kitchen smells like cat pee ( right by basement door that is forever damp and usually flooded). So I'm gonna buy a hazmat suit ( dangerous mold), a snake net ( rat snake) and a cat cage ( retarded kitten that must be peeing there)....and go put a dehumidifier down there. But I just want to be prepared.

Rat snake? Where-TF do these things live? PP who mentioned them, do you live out in the country? Please say yes.

Some other things that smell like cat pee;

Slowly emitting gas (from a gas stove left on) smells cat pee- ish to me

Varnish or wax used on old wood furniture also can smell of cat pee. I haven't figured it out yet, but a combination of old wood, mold and varnish can smell.

Um. That fixed the carpet. What about the leak that caused the carpet damage.

Wet carpet pad gives off this smell even if carpet feels dry to the touch. Pull carpet back and check or you'll have mold problems later.

our new basement is pretty humid and we hadn't gotten a dehumidifier for the first few weeks. it started smelling like piss. but once we got the dehumidifier and kept it running, the smell went away.
