WTF - Basement smell like cat piss suddenly - we don't have cats!!!!

Anonymous
As we all know, cat piss has a very distinct odor; one that I do not think is replicated anywhere (as far as I know).
We've lived in our house for six years. Same finished basement is in place as was there when we bought he house. Probably about 12 years since it was done. Carpeted floors.
We have has some minor mildew smells here an there from some water seeping in though the foundation During some summer monsoons we've had the last three summers. However, we have never ever ever smelled cat pee, and now we do. We do not own cats, an neither did previous owners. We do have dogs however, but they are well trained, and besides, dog pee smells nothing like cat pee from what I have experienced.
Thoughts on he cause?
We plan to hire professional carpet cleaners, and ask them about deodorizing. It had been about two year since the last time we had pros come in to clean.

This happens at my house. Right by the front door.

There is the possibility you are smelling the musk of a rat snake. Even a baby rat snake can produce a very strong smell. A snake would have a much easier time getting into your basement than a cat.

Or stink bugs. We have cats, and I squished one stink bug and I swear it smelled like cat pee.

A stray tom cat snuck into our house last summer, and he pissed everywhere before we found out he was in there. It only takes a few minutes.

Sometimes water/damp can smell like this. Perhaps it's a type of mold. Water from our cooler at work spilled on the carpet and soaked in and smelled like cat for a while. I'd look to see if there's a leak somewhere.

Winner winner chicken dinner!!!
We had Normandy Carpet out today. It was a leak. They pulled up a corner of the W2W carpet and the pad was soaked. Happy to have found the source, and even more happy that it isn't a RAT SNAKE!!! WTF dude? A rat snake? I am terrified of snakes. DW and I just laughed very hard reading that reply. Thank you all.

Congrats on finding the cause. I only mentioned rat snake because I found one in our basement after the snake released its musk odor. Ironic though you are infinitely more happy the problem is a leak. Its a lot cheaper to catch a baby snake than resolve all the issues resulting from the leak.

Glad you figured it out. I stepped in cat shit taking out the garbage the other morning. I tracked it all through the house. It took half a day to get the smell out.

Our old wooden front door smells this way. Could there be a water problem there? We also have a storm door...

OP here. The guy from Normandy told DW it wasn't a cat piss smell, but was in fact the smell of mold in the early stages. We caught it in time. About a $250 repair for a 10 x 10 section of w2w carpet.

Boxwood shrubs smell like cat pee! we have them outside our basement windows, so it makes our basement stink sometimes. There are other plants that have the same smell, but these shrubs are very common.

I know that OP already found the cause, but I'm sharing this for others who said they have the same problem.

The neighbor's cat may be peeing on your front door. No joke. Do you have pets in the house?
