If you are a SAHM or SAHD, how much money does your spouse make?

118K. We live in Falls Church City in a single-family-home that is small, but nice!

$207,000

We also make about $7,500 a year from investments.

It works well. We're a little short on college money, but otherwise we're fine.

Very true. Unfortunately for us, I was the breadwinner for a number of years, and now DH has caught up and we make equal salaries. I will be nice in 10 years when his salary far exceeds mine (but too late to SAHM at that point!). A little more disparity between the split (more him, less me) would have made a decision to SAHM an easy one.

"It" will be nice!

We are in N Bethesda in an older and smaller house. My dh makes 90K. We have four children. We have decent savings/investments from when I worked and we did well with our last house sale and this house purchase. We are not putting anything extra into savings right now, outside maxing out his 401K. Hopefully when I work down the road, that will change. I do worry about when they get older and college of course but we are happy right now.

225K but as recent as 2 years ago it was 180K. We get an additional 5-10K/year from family. Live in NW DC and live a very comfortable life---own our house, save, send our 2 kids to preschool, etc.
Honestly, I don't think the difference in lifestyle isn't too great once you reach a certain income level (150K maybe?). Plus the more you make, the more you pay in taxes. We pay surprisingly little (no AMT (yet) etc).

Are your children in school yet? Public or private? We'd love to live in DC but could not afford private school and public doesn't seem like a good option.

For those of you who rent, do you have any suggestions on where to find rentals besides craigslist? We are new to the area and have only begun looking. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Specifically looking in Arlington or close by/metro accessible to Rosslyn.

PP here. . . Rentals including apartments, condos, townhouses, SFH (though probably out of our price range!) Do people use realtors to find rentals? Thanks!!!

We live in NE DC - Brookland Area - and my husband is in law school. I make about 70K (though it was much less last year when I took 5 months (4 unpaid) off to have a baby), we have one child, own our home, and are thrifty, but comfortable. The baby is in daycare three days a week.

We used Craiglist but there isn't a lot available on there now I've found - lots in Spring and Summer. We did see a few properties with realtors but didn't like them. Obviously sales are their priority so I wa finding places that met our needs better on my own. Where are you looking and what is the budget?

rent.com
apartments.com
apartment showcase from the post

and honestly what worked best for us was to walk around and stop door to door in the area where we were looking at.

we're in ballston.

I'm so impressed by the frugalistas here. I think you all have the right priorities. I'm going to start using some of the ideas mentioned here!

We rent in Courthouse and love it -- there aren't many rentals that are big enough for families, here, though -- possibly Colonial Village or the Odyssey.

Ballston would also be super-convenient and probably not too expensive to rent a condo in. Clarendon is great, but then you're looking at maybe $2500 a month for a cheapish rental?

Good luck!
