how do celebrities/models stay so thin and in shape?

Anonymous
Seriously, does anyone really know how do they do it? Do they just really not eat? How do they find the energy to exercise if they are not eating much? And they must be pretty busy...how do they find the time to exercise? I am seriously wondering how they do it. Is there some secret that I don't know about?

Lots of them are naturally thin.

But in lots of cases, yeah, they really don't eat. You know all those headlines about celebrity freakouts, where someone threw a phone at her assistant or attacked a photographer or screamed at the craft services people because there's was only splenda and no equal? That's what happens when you're hungry all the time. And spoiled, of course.

When you say they're busy, part of their jobs is working out and maintaining the body. It's not something they have to squeeze in around their other commitments. It IS a commitment. Basically, being beautiful for a living is a full-time job bordering on (or even fully blown) obsession. People who get famous for their looks are the workaholics of their skill group.

Personal Trainer - comes to you and works around your schedule. May even travel with them.

Personal Chef - cooks very low calorie but filling food. May even travel with them.

So all of those events they attend, where they serve lavish meals...all of those plates go untouched?

I figured that they probably hardly eat...but any time I drop my caloric intake (even to a reasonable level, like 1100-1300 cals/day), I can barely run 3 miles without needing to stop and walk because I have so little energy. I wonder how they manage to work out while eating so little.

They are usually naturally thin.
They have the means to have food prepared / delivered for them.
They have personal trainers.
Their livelihood depends on looking good and they're constantly analyzed - that's motivation.
A lot smoke and/or take diet pills or funky things provided by special doctors.
They don't eat much.

Even some of the seemingly "normal" ones -- like Heidi Klum and Giselle B. -- the ones who are moms...even they are doing all of this crazy non-eating, pill-popping? I don't know how they do that with kids.

This, plus I've read several interviews with celebs who admit that they are hungry pretty much all the time. I can't imagine either not being able to eat what I'd like (within reason) or having to work out 4 hours a day just to stay that thin and in shape.

I think they do what Bethenny preaches - taste everything, eat nothing. Or maybe they eat less a couple of days before to fit into their dress and to be able to eat. But! This reminds me of an article I read years ago where a writer asked a food critic how she stayed so thin, eating at the best restaurants all over the world. The food critic said, when you eat this way all the time, it becomes less special. It's frequent. If you don't finish this devine cheesecake tonight, it's okay because there'll be another fabulous cheesecake next week. Reminding myself of that has helped me actually, to eat less desserts.

And that's why you (and I) aren't in the beauty industry. Just as I don't have the smarts to be a cancer researcher, I don't have the body or the personality to be professionally beautiful. The ones that succeed often represent a perfect storm of qualities: good figure/ hair/ skin/ face, metabolism that is suited to go long hours on few calories, a narcissistic personality that thrives on rather than rejects attention, and if we the audience is really lucky, they can act, too. (As we see with the Kristen Stewarts and Julia Roberts of the world, though, the acting is pretty much the last criteria that determines success in Hollywood, at least for women.)

Oh, and there is NOTHING reasonable about 1100 calories a day! Sheesh.

For me, it's not unreasonable. I'm small at only 5'1" - my caloric needs aren't that high. about 1500-1800 for maintenance, and 1100-1300 for weight loss (and I am 30 lbs overweight, so I'd like to lose some).

Working out 4 hours a day may seem an impossible task to you if you are a WOHM or a SAHM juggling errands and kids all day long. Even for single people who work FT jobs spending 4 hours a day at the gym isn't going to happen. But, if this is really your job, like for many fitness models or fitness instructors, there is no issue at all. You do put a full time shift at the gym just like we put a full time shift at our offices, hospitals, households, etc.

For actresses, singers, models, who have other engagements, they usually have down times where they do work out several hours a day, they go into these fits of extreme workout and that's all they do, to prepare for some role, or album, or a major fashion show. They may also starve for a few days before the major appearance or a photoshoot. Sometimes they openly admit it. With these type of professions, it's not like our jobs, there is down time always, it's not like an actress shoots one movie and then goes straight into the next one. The more famous the singer/actress/model is the less they have to work to make the same and we usually have visibility of the most famous ones, not just the ones trying to make it.

Agree with 11:51...I'm 5'4'' and to lose weight 1200 is my recommended caloric intake and I have a pretty active job/lifestyle.

Some people are just naturally slim and I would imagine a lot of the celebrities are that way. The ones who aren't have to starve themselves (for example Gisele vs. Jessica Simpson, see what happened to each after having a kid). It is absolutely possible to be slim without starving yourself. I am 5'8" and 120 lbs. I have one child. I go to the gym may be once per week. I do not starve myself ever. And honestly, to gain more weight I would have to eat some serious desserts every day. It's genetic for me, so I do believe that it can be genetic for a lot of the celebrities, although probably not all of them.
