...but to add maybe the state is hoping to attract and keep smart students in the state, esp. with the large amount of foreign investment that comes in. |
A little different tack: my daughter is presently at the Universty of South Carolina. With Hurricane Irma headed for Florida and predicted to have an impact on South Carolina by early next week, I am trying to convince her to come home. She says no.
The SC Governor will not make a decision about mandatory evacuations by some time Friday, which may be too late to start traveling out. Her classes end at 12:30 Friday and I bought her a bus ticket out at 2:30 pm. If in the end the storm has little to n impact, I can send her back on Sunday. I have asked her to sign me up for Carolina alerts so I get messages on the university's status and how they are preparing and what they recommend. Any thoughts on the threat of the storm to Columbia, SC and th University of South Carolina. |
Can we all agree that nobody outside of the state of South Carolina thinks of the University of South Carolina when somebody says USC? |
Nope. |
Nobody? Not correct. Almost nobody? Sure. |
My son graduated USC in May. Go Cocks! He is currently in grad school (scholarship) and got into all 10 grad schools he applied to, including Duke. Haters gonna hate but it worked out for my son. Regarding the safety and evacuations- There were two bad storms in the 4 years my son was there (2013-2017.) Both times Carolina cancelled classes with PLENTY of time to get home. I am guessing that they will release the students today or early tomorrow. Professors WILL work with the out of state kids that are 1-2 days late arriving back. They will also work with the students that had losses to homes/property and who have to stay with family a few extra days to help with cleanup. They will have food and water for the kids that are on campus. They will have food and water for the off campus kids as well. My sons first year there classes were cancelled 3 days for one inch of snow and a smidgen of ice. They are very cautious. No worries. Just a heads up for flights- book both one way (not round trip) and I always use southwest when I can. American is cheaper but the fees for switching flights make it totally not worth the savings if you need to make a change. Last thing- try DiPritos for Sunday brunch when you go down to see your kid. It's fabulous. |
I don't mind the "USC" but referring to themselves as "Carolina" is truly a bit much. Like, most people in South Carolina don't think of the University of south Carolina when they say "Carolina" |
We hail thee, Carolina, and sing thy high praise With loyal devotion, remembering the days When proudly we sought thee, thy children to be: Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee! |
I've always used USC for South Carolina. Is southern California ever abbreviated SC outside of the university name? SC is the postal code for South Carolina. SC was also founded 70-80 years prior to Southern California. |
When was the University of Southern California founded? The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801. |
1880 |
Actually I do. Most schools that start with a U are the state flagship school, so University of South Carolina is the logical guess when hearing USC. |
Are they really the Cocks? I would hate to see their mascot. |
Yup. My son had a shirt that said party like a cock star. Gamecocks are roosters with big spurs. It's part if the fun and charm of the school. The mascots name is cocky. |
Google USC; practically every hit is from Southern Cal. Doesn't matter which one was here first, it matters what people think when they here USC and the majority of people don't think of South Carolina. |
