I assume turning down the scholarships to UNC and Alabama was the dumb move. Your last sentence makes it seem like the dumb move was leaving the expensive school. |
You're right, turning down the scholarships was the dumb move, especially because they transferred at full out of state tuition rate to attend one of those schools after a year. |
17/18 year old kids are bound to make mistakes. One of the privileges of youth.
To the original question--no, I'd rather send my kid to UVA instate over Alabama or SC if he prefers going to UVA. |
No. Currently paying in-state at UVA for DC. DC was offered two full-freight packages at small SLACS. UVA was the perfect fit. |
It depends on if it's in state or out of state. There is a 100,000 difference over 4 years. |
Yes. |
Would pay full in-state freight for UVA, especially if you think your child wants to do grad work. |
Because....? |
Because nobody from Alabama or South Carolina ever goes to grad school. Duh! |
I did this. Went to Tennessee, was in the honors college, etc. All free with a stipend.
Which was helpful since medical school was incredibly expensive. I still had debt, but it was way, way less than others I know. |
Different school. But my daughter got a full academic scholarship at University of Florida as a National Merit Scholar. It was a wonderful surprise! |
You could let your child decide between UVA with limited, whatever that means for your family, and UA/SC with $100k of spending money. I am pretty sure I know which they will chose (roll tide).
Maybe you want to know about job prospects coming out of UA/SC and UVA. This depends on the student, the major, and finances. $100k can be the difference between getting to volunteer with a professor, hiring a tutor when needed, taking summer classes or an extra semester, getting good sleep, eating healthy, engaging in networking activities, and a semester abroad instead of flipping burgers. That can likely offset any difference in reputation. |
FWIW it's worth my DD is now enrolled as a freshman at the University of South Carolina. It was her last choice, but came with a pretty penny attached to it. She decided to attend. You know what? She is loving it? She has a very challenging courseload, and is getting involved in all sorts of campus of activities of interest to her. She was invited to lunch with the Dean of her school her second week there after simply talking with him after some presentation given to students. Happy child = happy Dad. |
As an in-state SC resident, this annoys me no end. |
Oh well....... |
